    About the Road Accident Fund (RAF)

    The Road Accident Fund is an organization committed to providing cover for all road users in South Africa. Their mission is to rehabilitate and compensate individuals injured in road accidents in a timely and compassionate manner. Moreover, RAF actively promotes the safe use of roads across the country. The organization plays a pivotal role in offering financial relief and medical aid to those affected by road-related accidents.

    This pharmacist vacancy is part of RAF’s larger mission to improve healthcare outcomes for accident victims through policy development, stakeholder engagement, and clinical research.

    Purpose of the Pharmacist

    This role involves reporting to the Manager: Medical Tariffs and Pharmaceuticals. The chosen candidate will be responsible for reviewing treatment protocols, participating in drug-related development, and ensuring adherence to healthcare guidelines. The pharmacist will also play a significant role in formulating and implementing policies related to healthcare, drug safety, and utilization patterns.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Pharmacology Treatment Protocol Development

    • Scientific Evidence Evaluation: Review and assess scientific research to select appropriate medications for protocol development.
    • New Treatment Assessment: Analyze the effectiveness of new treatments, using evidence-based research to develop drug programs.
    • Program Development: Develop drug utilization programs aimed at improving the quality of life for patients.

    2. Patient Safety and Quality Assurance

    • Safety Protocols: Review drug utilization patterns and identify any issues related to prescriptions, including drug interactions, allergies, and dosage issues.
    • Drug Monitoring: Assist in the design of drug utilization and monitoring programs to enhance patient safety.

    3. Pharmacy Benefit Design

    • Formulary Development: Assist in creating an approved medication list (drug formulary) for RAF.
    • Tariff Input: Provide input on the development of medical tariffs and help shape pharmacy-related guidelines.

    4. Policy Review and Implementation

    • Policy Creation: Participate in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
    • Policy Execution: Ensure these policies are up-to-date and effectively executed.

    5. Stakeholder Management

    • Industry Engagement: Regularly engage with professional bodies and industry stakeholders to stay updated on new developments.
    • Protocol Awareness: Ensure stakeholder buy-in and awareness of any newly developed treatment protocols.

    6. Reporting

    • Data Collection: Gather and analyze data to inform decisions and compile monthly reports.
    • Administration: Perform administrative duties when required to ensure efficient running of the department.

    Requirements

    To be considered for this role, you must meet the following qualifications:

    • Education: A B. Pharm degree or equivalent is required.
    • Registration: Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council as a pharmacist.
    • Experience: At least 5–7 years of relevant experience is required, with at least 2 years of experience in a Medical Aid/Managed Healthcare environment.
    • Additional Training: Certification in Evidence-Based Training (PTCMA) or Health Technology Assessment Training (HTA) would be advantageous.
    • Technical Expertise: Experience working with ICD 10 codes, CPT codes, and NAPPI codes is essential. Familiarity with South African regulatory bodies and health-related legislation is highly desirable.

    Technical and Behavioral Competencies Required

    • Resilience and adaptability in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
    • Strong networking and stakeholder management skills.
    • Knowledge of evidence-based medicine and ability to apply research data in developing protocols.
    • Proficiency in risk management and change management.
    • Understanding of relevant healthcare legislation, such as the National Health Act, the RAF Act, and the Medical Schemes Act.
