Purpose of the Pharmacist
This role involves reporting to the Manager: Medical Tariffs and Pharmaceuticals. Key Responsibilities
1. Pharmacology Treatment Protocol Development
- Scientific Evidence Evaluation: Review and assess scientific research to select appropriate medications for protocol development.
- New Treatment Assessment: Analyze the effectiveness of new treatments, using evidence-based research to develop drug programs.
- Program Development: Develop drug utilization programs aimed at improving the quality of life for patients.
2. Patient Safety and Quality Assurance
- Safety Protocols: Review drug utilization patterns and identify any issues related to prescriptions, including drug interactions, allergies, and dosage issues.
- Drug Monitoring: Assist in the design of drug utilization and monitoring programs to enhance patient safety.
3. Pharmacy Benefit Design
- Formulary Development: Assist in creating an approved medication list (drug formulary) for RAF.
- Tariff Input: Provide input on the development of medical tariffs and help shape pharmacy-related guidelines.
4. Policy Review and Implementation
- Policy Creation: Participate in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
- Policy Execution: Ensure these policies are up-to-date and effectively executed.
5. Stakeholder Management
- Industry Engagement: Regularly engage with professional bodies and industry stakeholders to stay updated on new developments.

6. Reporting

Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Education: A B. Pharm degree or equivalent is required.
- Registration: Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council as a pharmacist.
- Experience: At least 5–7 years of relevant experience is required, with at least 2 years of experience in a Medical Aid/Managed Healthcare environment.
- Additional Training: Certification in Evidence-Based Training (PTCMA) or Health Technology Assessment Training (HTA) would be advantageous.
- Technical Expertise: Experience working with ICD 10 codes, CPT codes, and NAPPI codes is essential. Familiarity with South African regulatory bodies and health-related legislation is highly desirable.
