    1. Teaching Assistant Vacancies: Online Independent Contractor (Teaching Assistant)

    • Position: Online Independent Contractor (Teaching Assistant)
    • College: Science, Engineering, and Technology
    • School: Computing
    • Reference: Teaching Assistants/Contr/CSET 2025
    • Module: EUP1501 – Ethical Information and Communication Technologies for Development Solution
    • Gross Remuneration: R 18,060.80
    • Closing Date: 13 September 2024, by 16:00

    General Responsibilities:

    • Content Delivery: Implement and manage the content and pedagogy of the subject.
    • Student Support: Provide online academic and technical assistance to students.
    • Tutorial Facilitation: Conduct and manage online tutorials.
    • Learning Management: Oversee students’ online learning experiences.
    • Peer Interaction: Facilitate interactions among students.
    • Query Response: Address student inquiries within 48 hours.
    • Assignment Evaluation: Mark and provide feedback on student assignments.

    Requirements:

    • Employment Status: Must not be a current UNISA Fixed Term or Permanent staff member.
    • Internet Access: Ongoing access to the internet at your own cost.
    • Software: Own copies of necessary software (e.g., internet browsers, word processors).
    • Qualifications: Relevant M.Ed/PhD qualifications are required. Only those with qualifications in line with UNISA College of Science, Engineering, and Technology will be considered.
    • Current UNISA Roles: Do not apply if you are already an UNISA e-tutor or Teaching Assistant.

    Skills Needed:

    • Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer and internet skills.
    • Communication: Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English for text-based interaction (via Moodle and discussion forums).
    • Commitment: Strong commitment to meeting deadlines and a passion for student-centered learning.
    • Personal Attributes: Friendly, patient, and sensitive to diverse student needs.

    Contractor Terms:

    • Employment Status: Not considered an employee of UNISA.
    • Benefits: No entitlement to UNISA employee benefits (e.g., medical aid, office space, equipment, leave).
    • Infrastructure: Provide own computer, internet access, workspace, and other office-related equipment.
    • Work Schedule: Minimum of one hour per day, up to five days a week (including marking).

    Specific Requirements for the Department of Computer Science:

    • Qualifications: Preference for candidates with a PhD (NQF 10) relevant to the qualifications within the UNISA College of Science, Engineering, and Technology.

      • Certified copy of SAQA verification of foreign qualifications (issued within the last three months).

    • Interview and Training: Shortlisted candidates must complete a virtual interview and mandatory online training.

    2. Teaching Assistant Vacancies: Teaching Assistants for Signature Modules

    • Role: Online Teaching Assistant (Independent Contractor)
    • College: Accounting Sciences (CAS)
    • Module: CAS1501 Perspectives on Accountancy
    • Nature of Employment: Independent contractor, not an employee
    • Benefits: No benefits such as medical, office space, or leave are provided
    • Infrastructure: Must provide own computer, internet access, and office equipment
    • Location: Not based at a UNISA campus or affiliated location
    • Work Hours: Minimum of 20 hours per week, spread over most days
    • Closing Date: 20 September 2024

    Duties:

    1. Course Familiarization:
      • Review and understand subject content of the course online.
    2. Content and Assessment Review:
      • Provide feedback on online study materials and assessments at the start and throughout the semester.
    3. Pedagogical Approach:
      • Learn about the pedagogical methods used for the course, including required online training from UNISA.
    4. myUnisa Platform:
      • Get familiar with the myUnisa learning platform through required online training.
    5. TA Support and Mentoring:
      • Engage in the TA support site, assist fellow TAs, and mentor new TAs to meet performance standards.
    6. Content Contribution:
      • Contribute ideas, draft content, or create assessment questions as requested by lecturers.
    7. Student Support:
      • Facilitate, support, and guide online learning for approximately 200 students.
      • Facilitate online discussions related to the subject.
    8. Assessment and Feedback:
      • Participate in marking assessments and meetings, provide personalized feedback, and prepare online pre-guidance and post-feedback for student assessments.
    9. Communication:
      • Respond professionally to student queries within 24 to 48 hours.
      • Maintain frequent online communication with the lead lecturer.
    10. Administrative Tasks:
      • Handle various administrative tasks related to the TA role, such as marking spreadsheets and plagiarism reports.

    Competencies, Skills, and Attributes:

    • Minimum Criteria:
      • Meet the College-specific appointment criteria.
      • Available to work at least 20 hours per week.
      • Reliable internet access at own cost.
    • Technical Skills:
      • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
      • No additional software training will be provided.
    • Personal Attributes:
      • Commitment to meeting deadlines.
      • Passion for student-centered learning.
      • Excellent communication skills in English.
      • Prior experience with myUnisa and teaching is advantageous.

    Remuneration and Timeline:

    • Monthly Remuneration: R18,060.80 per annum
    • Contract Start Date: 1st February 2025
    • Payment: Remuneration starts upon activation in the TA role.
