    If you’re an experienced professional in construction project management with a passion for community development, an exciting opportunity awaits you in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit in Durban is seeking a dedicated Project Manager to lead, plan, and oversee capital and developmental projects.


    This permanent position requires a dynamic leader who is capable of working outside standard office hours when necessary, engaging with the community, and contributing to meaningful projects across the region.

    • Reporting To: Manager (IDP and Projects)

    Key Responsibilities

    The Project Manager will oversee a range of capital and developmental projects, ensuring they are completed within scope, on time, and within budget. Below are the main responsibilities:

    • Project Planning and Implementation: Work alongside Deputy Heads to plan, execute, and monitor capital and developmental projects within the unit.
    • Financial Management: Manage and control financial elements for all projects, ensuring adherence to financial policies, asset management practices, and budget control.
    • Team Development and Management: Oversee staff performance, provide guidance, and participate in hiring processes for new team members.
    • Representation: Act on behalf of the Unit Head or Senior Manager of Integration and Communication at meetings and community events related to capital projects.
    • Reporting and Communication: Maintain consistent communication with project stakeholders to provide updates, address challenges, and ensure community-focused project delivery.

    This role demands a high degree of attention to detail, accountability, and ethical conduct. Problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills will be critical to successfully meet project objectives and enhance service delivery for Durban’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit.

    Competencies Required

    Ideal candidates should exhibit the following skills and competencies:

    • Discipline-Specific Skills: Knowledge and expertise in the built environment, civil engineering, or construction management.
    • Financial Management: Proficiency in budget control, financial tracking, and resource allocation.
    • People Management: Ability to develop, manage, and lead a team, promoting productivity and positive workplace culture.
    • Planning and Organizing: Strong skills in scheduling, task prioritization, and timeline management.
    • Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in documentation, compliance, and project monitoring.
    • Communication and Problem-Solving: Skilled in addressing challenges, resolving disputes, and communicating effectively across various levels.
    • Accountability and Ethical Conduct: Demonstrated commitment to ethical practices and accountability in project management.
    • Team Orientation: Collaborative mindset with an orientation towards team success and support.

    Essential Qualifications and Experience

    To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • Education: Diploma (NQF Level 6) in the Built Environment, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
    • Professional Registration: Must be registered with a relevant statutory body such as ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa), SACQSP (South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession), or SACAP (South African Council for the Architectural Profession).
    • License: Valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
    • Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in Construction Project Management.

    Preferred Requirements:

    • Degree: NQF Level 7 degree in the Built Environment, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent.
    • Experience: Five years of experience in Construction Project Management.
