    Position Overview

    The Regional Employee Relations Manager plays a pivotal role in providing specialist legal advice and counseling to management and employees on employment-related matters. The successful candidate will lead initiatives to foster labor peace, mitigate conflicts, and maintain a productive work environment. Core responsibilities include handling grievances, disciplinary cases, industrial action, CCMA arbitrations, employee rights, affirmative action, and compliance with employment laws such as the Labour Relations Act and Basic Conditions of Service Act.

    Key Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be responsible for:

    Strategic Implementation

    • Driving the implementation of the Transnet Group Employee Relations (ER) Strategy within TPT.
    • Developing and applying ER policies aligned with organizational goals to foster employee satisfaction and productivity.
    • Communicating with labor representatives to ensure awareness and buy-in for ER strategies and policies.

    Risk and Compliance

    • Assessing and mitigating risks related to employment practices and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
    • Providing guidance to the Regional EXCO on labor laws, Transnet policies, and risk prevention in labor relations.

    Operational Management

    • Managing grievances and disciplinary procedures consistently across the organization, ensuring alignment with best practices and legal standards.
    • Using tools like SAP HCM ER modules for tracking and reporting on discipline and grievance cases.
    • Improving managerial capabilities through training and strategic support for grievance and disciplinary management.

    Legal and Advisory Services

    • Liaising with attorneys on employee-related legal matters and offering expert advice on dispute resolution.
    • Representing the organization in CCMA arbitrations and conciliation disputes.

    Performance Monitoring

    • Evaluating ER initiatives and reporting their effectiveness, ensuring alignment with TPT’s strategic imperatives.
    • Producing detailed reports with recommendations, best practices, and risk analysis for senior leadership.

    Qualifications and Experience

    The ideal candidate should meet the following requirements:

    Education

    • A 3-year degree in Labour Relations, Human Resources, or a related field is mandatory.
    • A relevant NQF 7 qualification or the Transnet Leadership Development Programme will be advantageous.

    Experience

    • At least 5 years’ experience providing labor relations advisory services within a large organization.
    • A minimum of 2 years in a managerial or specialist capacity.
    • Proven expertise in handling grievances, dispute resolution, and disciplinary cases.

    Skills

    • Strong knowledge of labor legislation and HR practices.
    • Experience with CCMA procedures and statutory dispute resolution structures.
    • Exceptional leadership, conflict management, and negotiation skills.
    • Proficiency in strategy formulation, analytical problem-solving, and reporting.
    • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to engage stakeholders at all levels.
