    The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), one of South Africa’s most prestigious academic institutions, is dedicated to promoting diversity and equity in its workforce. In an exciting development, UKZN’s College of Health Sciences has recently announced a Research Assistant job opportunity within the Discipline of Public Health Medicine, as part of their groundbreaking project WEATHER (Warning System for Extreme Weather Events, Awareness Technology for Healthcare, Equitable Delivery, and Resilience).


    Research Assistant Job Overview

    • Location: Howard College Campus, School of Nursing and Public Health, University of KwaZulu-Natal

    Research Assistant Job Description

    The Research Assistant position is available for a 12-month fixed-term appointment at the School of Nursing and Public Health at UKZN’s Howard College campus, under the Discipline of Public Health Medicine. This role will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge health research initiative while pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health, Biostatistics, Data Science, or Health Informatics.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The Research Assistant will be involved in various essential tasks that contribute directly to the success of the WEATHER project. Key responsibilities include:

    1. Conceptualization and Implementation of Research: The successful candidate will be expected to conceptualize and implement a sub-study that aligns with the objectives of the WEATHER project. This will serve as the basis for their Master’s research.
    2. Data Collection and Analysis: A critical aspect of the job involves ensuring the timely collection of high-quality data. The Research Assistant will be responsible for performing data cleaning, conducting biostatistical analyses, and interpreting results for dissemination.
    3. Reporting and Collaboration: The candidate will be required to track and report on project activities, ensuring effective communication within the team. Collaboration with other researchers, including postgraduate students, is an essential part of the role.
    4. Dissemination of Findings: The Research Assistant will actively engage in sharing the project’s findings by participating in conferences, workshops, and seminars, and contributing to academic publications.
    5. Master’s Program Enrollment: The candidate must enroll in a Master’s degree program within the first six months of employment, furthering their academic and professional development in the field of public health and data science.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following qualifications and skills:

    • Education: A completed Honours degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Health Informatics, or a closely related field.
    • Academic Performance: A minimum academic achievement of 65% or higher in the Honours degree.
    • Interest in Public Health: A strong interest in public health, biostatistics, and health data science.
    • Data Management Skills: Applicants should possess skills in data management, programming, data analysis, and visualization.
    • Teamwork: Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Driver’s License: A valid motor vehicle driver’s license in South Africa.
    • Citizenship: South African citizens are preferred.

    Essential Requirements

    In addition to the minimum qualifications, the following competencies are essential for success in this role:

    • Mathematics and Statistics: A strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, or computing is critical.
    • Programming Skills: Proficiency in at least one high-level programming language (e.g., Python or R).
    • Data Quality Management: Experience in Data Quality Management and familiarity with related tools will be highly advantageous.
    • Collaboration Skills: Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Experience in working with multinational collaborations is an added advantage.
