This role, which sits within their Operations Division, is a critical part of maintaining a safe, healthy, and environmentally compliant working environment. With a competitive salary package of R537,208 per annum, inclusive of benefits, this position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual with the right skills and qualifications to contribute to the ongoing safety and sustainability efforts at Nahoon Dam.

    SHE Officer Job Overview

    • Location: Nahoon Dam, Eastern Cape
    • Division: Operations
    • Salary: R537,208 (per annum inclusive of benefits)
    • Closing date: 04 November 2024

What Does a SHE Officer Do?

The role of a SHE Officer (Safety, Health, and Environmental Officer) is vital in any organization, especially in operations like Amatola Water, where employees face various risks while ensuring water delivery services. The SHE Officer is responsible for identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and implementing measures to reduce those risks. They play a crucial part in ensuring the company’s compliance with SHE-related legislation and internal policies, making workplaces safer for all.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Grade 12 and a National Diploma in Safety Management (NQF 6) or an equivalent qualification are the minimum educational requirements for this role. This ensures that applicants have a solid foundation in safety management, preparing them for the practical challenges they will face in this demanding job.

    Preferred Qualification:

While the minimum qualifications suffice, candidates with a B Tech in Safety Management (NQF 7) or an equivalent qualification will have a distinct advantage. Additionally, holding a Nebosh General International Certificate would further strengthen an applicant’s chances.

    Professional Registration:

To be considered for the SHE Officer role, candidates must be registered with the South African Council for Project and Construction Management (SACPCMP) as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO). This professional registration verifies that the individual has met industry standards and is recognized for their ability to manage health and safety in construction environments.

    Minimum Experience Required:

To qualify for this role, candidates must have at least three years’ experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) practice. Experience in this field ensures that applicants are well-versed in identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, and implementing safety protocols.

Moreover, applicants should have sound knowledge of SHEQ management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001). Familiarity with these international standards indicates that the applicant can help the company manage quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety risks effectively.

    Additional Training:
Candidates with certifications in SAMTRAC training, the SHE Auditors Course, and SHE Risk Assessment Training are highly sought after. These additional qualifications provide the skills needed to perform comprehensive safety audits and risk assessments, ensuring the organization remains compliant with all legal and industry-specific safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities of the SHE Officer:

Reporting directly to the SHEQ Specialist, the SHE Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

    • Hazard and Risk Identification: The officer will play a key role in identifying potential hazards and risks within the organization. By addressing these hazards, the SHE Officer helps develop risk reduction plans that keep employees safe.
    • SHE Risk Profiling: Continuously updating the company’s SHE risk profile ensures that all risks are accounted for and that proactive measures are put in place to mitigate them.
    • Integrated System Maintenance: The role requires the maintenance of Amatola Water’s Integrated System, ensuring that all SHE risks are managed effectively.
    • SHE Audits: The SHE Officer will be involved in both internal and external SHE system audits to check compliance with legal and other requirements.
    • Promoting SHE Awareness: Building a SHE culture within the organization is another core responsibility. The officer must promote awareness of health and safety issues and encourage compliance across all departments.
    • SHE Training: The SHE Officer will assist in identifying organizational SHE training needs and help maintain the training matrix.
    • Conformance with Legal Requirements: Ensuring that Amatola Water complies with all relevant health and safety laws and regulations is a vital part of this role.
    • Policy Development: The officer will assist in the development, review, and maintenance of SHE policies and procedures to ensure they are up-to-date and effective.
    • Data Analysis: Conducting monthly and annual trend analysis of SHE incidents helps in proactively reducing incident severity and frequency.
    • On-site Inspections: Regular on-site inspections are required to monitor SHE compliance and maintain emergency preparedness.

    Other Requirements:

In addition to the core qualifications and experience, candidates must also possess:

    • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in MS Office is essential for documenting reports and maintaining data.
    • Valid Unendorsed Driver’s Licence: This is important as regular site visits are required for on-site inspections.
    • Presentation Skills: The officer must be capable of delivering certain SHE training courses to staff.
    • Audit Skills: The ability to conduct thorough SHE audits is a key part of the job.

    Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position at Amatola Water not only offers a rewarding career with competitive pay but also provides an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where safety, health, and environmental protection are top priorities. The Nahoon Dam site offers unique challenges and opportunities, making this role ideal for a SHE professional looking to grow their career in water utilities management.

    Application Process:

If you meet the above qualifications and are interested in applying, you are required to submit:

    • A detailed CV
    • Certified copies of academic certificates
    • A certified ID copy (no older than 6 months)
    • Two most recent and relevant references

Send your application to the Human Resources Manager at Amatola Water. You can mail your documents to Private Bag X3, Vincent, 5217, or contact them via phone at (043) 707 3700. Alternatively, applications can be emailed to recruitment@amatolawater.co.za.
