    Wits University Social Worker Vacancy Overview:

    • Job Title: Social Worker
    • Location: Braamfontein, ZA
    • Organization: Gender Equity Office (GEO)
    • Contract: One Year
    • Closing Date: 07 August 2024

    Purpose of the Role

    • Support the Gender Equity Office (GEO) by managing and coordinating counselling, advice, and support for staff and students.
    • Handle various administrative tasks.
    • Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes, including mediation and gender sensitivity training.

    Requirements

    • Social Work degree.
    • At least 3 years of experience in the social justice sector.
    • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
    • Understanding of gendered power relations, broader gender dynamics, and institutional patriarchy.
    • Exceptional counselling and empathetic communication skills.
    • Ability to multi-task, think creatively, and be proactive.
    • Strong people skills, teamwork-oriented, and willingness to learn.
    • High attention to detail, accuracy, and productivity.
    • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • Willingness to work overtime when required.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Create a safe and confidential environment for survivors to share their experiences.
    • Employ therapeutic techniques tailored to individual needs.
    • Help clients process trauma and develop coping strategies.
    • Assist in safety planning and recovery pathways.
    • Provide information and referrals to external resources (shelters, legal aid, medical services).
    • Establish trust and rapport while maintaining professional boundaries and ethical standards.
    • Be accessible and approachable to all students seeking help.
    • Utilize active listening, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude.
    • Employ various counselling modalities to address academic stress, relationship issues, and mental health challenges.
    • Provide crisis intervention and immediate support to students in distress.
    • Coordinate with other campus resources, such as mental health services and academic advisors.
    • Participate in and organize wellness programs, workshops, and support groups.
    • Design and implement educational programs and workshops on gender-based violence, consent, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention.
    • Collaborate with student organizations, faculty, and administration to develop and implement policies addressing gender violence and discrimination.
    • Participate in campus committees and contribute to policy development.
    • Engage in research and data collection on the prevalence and impact of gender violence.
    • Advocate for the voices of survivors and marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
    • Promote systemic change to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
