Purpose of the Role
- Support the Gender Equity Office (GEO) by managing and coordinating counselling, advice, and support for staff and students.
- Handle various administrative tasks.
- Facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes, including mediation and gender sensitivity training.
Requirements
- Social Work degree.
- At least 3 years of experience in the social justice sector.
- Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
- Understanding of gendered power relations, broader gender dynamics, and institutional patriarchy.
- Exceptional counselling and empathetic communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task, think creatively, and be proactive.
- Strong people skills, teamwork-oriented, and willingness to learn.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and productivity.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Willingness to work overtime when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Create a safe and confidential environment for survivors to share their experiences.
- Employ therapeutic techniques tailored to individual needs.
- Help clients process trauma and develop coping strategies.
- Assist in safety planning and recovery pathways.
- Provide information and referrals to external resources (shelters, legal aid, medical services).
- Establish trust and rapport while maintaining professional boundaries and ethical standards.
- Be accessible and approachable to all students seeking help.
- Utilize active listening, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude.
- Employ various counselling modalities to address academic stress, relationship issues, and mental health challenges.
- Provide crisis intervention and immediate support to students in distress.
- Coordinate with other campus resources, such as mental health services and academic advisors.
- Participate in and organize wellness programs, workshops, and support groups.
- Design and implement educational programs and workshops on gender-based violence, consent, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention.
- Collaborate with student organizations, faculty, and administration to develop and implement policies addressing gender violence and discrimination.
- Participate in campus committees and contribute to policy development.
- Engage in research and data collection on the prevalence and impact of gender violence.
- Advocate for the voices of survivors and marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
- Promote systemic change to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
