Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme Overview
- Sasol Mainstream bursaries are performance-based, entailing a work-back/pay-back obligation.
- The bursary is inclusive, open to talented individuals pursuing full-time undergraduate/postgraduate degrees in selected Engineering, Science, and Technology fields nationally.
- Eligibility requires applicants to be South African citizens.
- Applicants must be currently registered or eligible for possible registration at an approved South African University for the upcoming academic year.
Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme Requirements:
Applications are accepted for degree programs (excluding diplomas) in specific fields of study. Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. / B.Sc.) are eligible for the following disciplines:
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemistry (Hons. required by Sasol)
- Civil Engineering
- Data Science (Computer Science / Mathematics / Operations Research / Statistics)
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Geology (Hons. required by Sasol)
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgy (Hons. required by Sasol)
- Mining Engineering
Undergraduate Studies (B. Eng. Tech.) at the University of Technology are available for:

Selection Criteria:
Application Criteria (Undergraduates – B.Eng. and B.Sc.):
- Mathematics: Level 6 (70 – 79%)
- Physical Science: Level 6 (70 – 79%)
- English First Additional Language: Level 5 (60 – 69%) or English Home Language: Level 5 (60 – 69%) or English Second Additional Language: Level 4 (50 – 59%)
General Application Criteria for Current University Students:
- Submission of Grade 12 results for current 1st-year students.
- Submission of 1st-year results for current 2nd-year students applying for third year.
- Submission of 2nd-year results for current 3rd-year students applying for 4th year/Hons.
- Submission of 3rd-year results for Hons. students applying for Masters.
- Submission of Hons. results for Master’s students applying for PhD.
- Minimum of 50% required for all courses in the previous academic year.
- Must be registered for the degree course over the minimum study period and/or able to complete studies in that period.
- Exclusions apply for students on extended study periods or planning to register for an extended degree course.
- Applications must be for full-time studies at an accredited South African University.
- Studies at UNISA will not be considered.
- No bursaries awarded for studies at a University of Technology except for Mine Surveying.
Current University Postgraduate Students (Masters/PhD):
- Minimum of 65% required for all courses in the previous academic year.
Sasol Foundation Bursary Criteria:
- South African citizenship.
- Acceptance or provisional acceptance for studies at a South African University or University of Technology.
- Combined Household Income less than 600,000 per annum.
- Minimum of 60% in all subjects.
- Non-STEM bursaries reserved for qualifying Children of Sasol Employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo Shareholders, or Candidates from Sasol Fence-line communities.
Additional Notes:
- Final selection prioritizes financially needy and academically competitive candidates.
- Selected individuals must undergo Interviews and psychometric assessments.
- Grade 12 applicants must submit Grade 11 final results.
- Other applicants may submit end-of-year results for their completed Grade 12.
- Higher Learning Institution enrollees may use their end-of-year results to apply.

Sasol Mainstream Bursary Undergraduate Bursaries Coverage:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees (excluding payment for repeat modules)
- Pocket money
- Meal allowance
- Accommodation money (equivalent to the average rate for single-room accommodation at the student’s university residence)
- Once-off Computer and Calculator allowance
- Work opportunities (with a work-back obligation/pay-back obligation)
- Development opportunities (e.g., possible vacation work after completion of 2nd and 3rd academic year)
- Psycho-social support (Student discussions/Workshops/EAP – Employee Assistance Programme @ Sasol, etc.)
Important Notes:
- Prescribed tuition fees, registration fees, and exam fees are paid directly to the university.
- Accommodation fees are paid directly to the university for university-administered accommodation.
- Students are responsible for paying for any repeat subjects.
- If students choose non-university administered accommodation, payments for accommodation and meals are made directly to the individual.
- Book and pocket money are paid directly to the individual.
- Payments are made twice a year, at the beginning of each semester.
