Purpose of the Position
The primary goal of the Sports Officer is to manage, promote, administer, and organize high-performance sport codes within Wits University. This includes developing strategies to enhance the sports culture on campus and ensuring student engagement through various sporting activities.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in Sports Management.
- Minimum three years of sports club management experience in Higher Education.
- Familiarity with USSA rules and regulations.
- Strong report writing and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple sports clubs concurrently.
- Diplomacy and conflict resolution abilities.
- Knowledge of Cricket, Football, or Hockey is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sports Club Management:
- Implement sports club systems and maintain relationships with local, regional, provincial, and national federations.
- Student Experience Promotion:
- Establish and manage mass participation programs such as internal leagues, club tournaments, and tours.
- Facilitate participation in USSA, Varsity Cup, Varsity Sports, and international tours as needed.
- Recruitment and Retention:
- Develop recruitment strategies from feeder schools and clubs.
- Monitor academic and athletic progress, awarding bursaries based on set criteria.
- Human Resources:
- Recommend and appoint coaches, team managers, and technical staff in line with university policies.
- Financial Management:
- Coordinate procurement of equipment and manage club finances.
- Lead fundraising efforts for USSA participation and other club needs.
- Administration:
- Ensure club affiliations with sports federations.
- Arrange timely facilities and transport bookings.
- Promote clubs through various social media platforms.
