The weather conditions can be harsh, and the successful candidate must be prepared for long hours and challenging tasks. However, working on the island also presents the opportunity to engage in significant conservation work that contributes to the health and preservation of a unique ecosystem.

    Why Marion Island?

Marion Island provides a unique working environment, with stunning natural landscapes and a remote, isolated setting. While the island presents its challenges, including the physical and mental strain of working in such an environment, it offers an unmatched opportunity for personal and professional growth.

Important Information for Both Positions at Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment

    Living Conditions

Candidates for both positions must be prepared to live and work on Marion Island for the full contract period from April 2025 to May 2026. Returning to South Africa before the contract end date is not an option. This means candidates must be self-sufficient, resilient, and capable of living in close quarters with a small group of people. Though the base is well-equipped with email, fax, and satellite telephone services, the island’s isolation can be mentally and emotionally challenging.

    Physical and Mental Fitness

Due to the demanding nature of the work and the harsh living conditions on Marion Island, candidates must be physically fit and mentally prepared for long working hours, sometimes in extreme conditions. The island’s isolation and challenging environment require candidates to be strong-willed and adaptable.

    Medical and Psychometric Assessments

Before being appointed to these positions, shortlisted candidates will undergo a thorough medical examination and psychometric assessment to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead. These assessments are provided at no cost to the applicant.

    Application Process

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply by the closing date of 28 October 2024. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form, available from any Public Service Department, and should be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
