Duties
- Carry out maintenance, repairs, installation, and replacement of carpentry and joinery works throughout the hospital and associated facilities.
- Repair, manufacture, and install doors, door frames, windows, cupboards, cabinets, counters, shelves, partitions, ceilings, roofing timber, and other wooden structures.
- Install and maintain hospital furniture, fittings, fixtures, and specialised timber components in wards, theatres, clinics, offices, and accommodation.
- Repair and replace locks, hinges, door closers, handles, and other ironmongery associated with carpentry works.
- Inspect buildings and hospital infrastructure to identify defects and carry out preventative and corrective maintenance.
- Read and interpret drawings, sketches, specifications, and work instructions to execute carpentry projects.
- Operate, maintain, and ensure the safe use of carpentry hand tools, power tools, machinery, and workshop equipment.
- Manufacture timber items according to required specifications and quality standards.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, infection prevention and control measures, and Departmental policies while performing maintenance activities.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests to ensure continuity of healthcare services.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards and building regulations.
- Maintain accurate job cards, maintenance records, material usage records, and daily work reports.
- Assist in preparing material estimates, specifications, quotations, and procurement requirements for carpentry projects.
- Monitor and control the use of materials, tools, and equipment, ensuring accountability and minimising wastage.
- Participate in planned preventative maintenance programs and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Supervise and provide guidance to Artisan Assistants, Tradesmen Aids, interns, and learners where applicable.
- Work collaboratively with other maintenance disciplines, including Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Painting, and Civil teams.
- Ensure good housekeeping in the carpentry workshop and maintain tools and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
- Participate in after-hours standby duties and emergency call-outs when required.
- Perform routine inspections of hospital infrastructure to identify potential safety hazards and maintenance requirements.
- Ensure compliance with the National Building Regulations and relevant South African National Standards (SANS).
- Assist with disaster recovery and emergency repairs during adverse weather events or infrastructure failures.
- Promote efficient utilisation of resources and implement cost-saving measures in maintenance operations.
- Mentor apprentices and contribute to skills development within the Maintenance Department.
- Maintain effective communication with users, supervisors, and contractors regarding maintenance activities.
- Perform any other maintenance-related duties as delegated by the Maintenance Supervisor, Foreman, or Chief Artisan.

REQUIREMENTS : Grade 10. Appropriate Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry in terms of section 13(2) (h) of the Manpower Act of 1981 as amended. Artisan Grade A: At least
0-2 years’ appropriate experience in an area after obtaining the relevant trade certificate. Artisan Grade B: At least 14 years’ appropriate / recognisable
experience in an area after obtaining the relevant trade certificate. Valid driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills And Competencies Required: Sound knowledge of
the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. Good communication skills,
Interpersonal skills and negotiation and planning. Technical report writing, practical skills and experience of the trade. Good knowledge of hospital plant
and machinery, equipment, air conditioning, as well as gas application and gas equipment. Good knowledge of legal compliance. Creativity and analytical
thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills. Ability to work in a team, be customer focused and responsiveness. Computer Literacy: MS Office
Software Package and presentation skills.
