HV Cable Electrician Job Purpose

The role of the HV Cable Electrician is to ensure an efficient and reliable high-voltage cable network. This involves tasks such as construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage cables and associated equipment. The position plays a crucial part in ensuring uninterrupted electricity services for the community.

Key Responsibility Areas

  1. Construction and Maintenance
    • Perform construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of high-voltage cables, including solid, XLPE, gas pressure-filled, and fluid pressure-filled types.
    • Work with low-voltage to 132 kV cables and associated apparatus.
  2. Administrative Functions
    • Handle records and documentation to ensure smooth workflow and compliance.
  3. Safety and Training
    • Implement safety measures and practices in the workplace.
    • Train and mentor team members to improve overall technical competencies.
  4. Other Duties
    • Undertake related tasks to support the electricity unit’s overall goals.

Special Conditions

  • Work Hours: 40 hours per week (5-day workweek).
  • Shift Work: As required by the employment contract.
  • Overtime: May be required to meet service demands.
  • Location: Subject to transfer/relocation within the Electricity Unit’s depots or divisions.
  • Protective Clothing: Provided as per the PPE schedule.

  • Hold a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a registered Further Education and Training College.
  • Possess a valid Code EB or EC1 (10) driving license or obtain one within six months of appointment.
  • Hold a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) or acquire it within six months if required.
  • Be trained in First Aid or complete training within six months of appointment.
  • Pass a proficiency test set by the department.
  • Have at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualification:

  • 3 years of relevant experience.
