    The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) is seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Systems Specialist: ICT Database Administrator. SAQA, a statutory public entity under the NQF Act, No. 67 of 2008, aims to ensure the effective management and maintenance of its databases. This role is vital for maintaining the integrity, performance, and security of SAQA’s data systems.


    ICT Database Administrator Overview

    • Job Title: Systems Specialist – ICT Database Administrator
    • Employer: South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
    • Salary: R671 027 – R781 057 Per Annum (All-Inclusive Package)
    • Benefits: 13th Cheque, Housing, Medical Aid, Pension Allowance
    • Contract Type: Permanent
    • Application Closing Date: 2024-07-05

    Minimum Requirements

    The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications and experience:

    • An appropriate recognized qualification at NQF Level 6 on the 10 Level NQF, or equivalent.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in SQL, MySQL, and Oracle database administration.
    • At least 2 years’ experience in working within a Cloud environment, such as Microsoft Azure and DevOps.
    • A minimum of 3 years of applications support and programming experience.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Systems Specialist: ICT Database Administrator at SAQA, your duties will include:

    • Database Design: Develop and implement robust database systems that meet organizational needs and specifications.
    • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with IT and business teams to align database strategies with organizational goals.
    • Automation: Implement automation processes for routine database tasks to increase efficiency and reduce errors.
    • Upgrades: Regularly upgrade database systems to support new features and functionalities.
    • Optimization: Optimize existing database systems to improve performance and scalability.
    • Customization: Tailor database solutions to meet specific departmental requirements and user needs.
    • Performance Tuning: Continuously monitor and tune database performance to ensure optimal operation.
    • Data Integrity: Implement and maintain data integrity controls to prevent data corruption and loss.
    • Security Monitoring: Monitor database security to detect and mitigate potential threats and vulnerabilities.
    • Resource Allocation: Conduct thorough database and application capacity planning to ensure resources are allocated efficiently.
    • Forecasting: Project future database growth and resource needs to plan for scalability.
    • Load Balancing: Implement load balancing techniques to distribute workloads evenly across the database environment.
    • Programming: Develop and maintain database programs using Oracle, SQL, MySQL, and Azure platforms.
    • Scripting: Write scripts for database automation, maintenance, and monitoring.
    • Integration: Ensure seamless integration of databases with other information systems and applications.
    • SaaS Management: Oversee the management of Software as a Service (SaaS) applications to ensure they meet organizational standards.
    • Infrastructure Management: Manage infrastructure and servers to support database operations.
    • PaaS Management: Oversee Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings to ensure they provide the necessary support for database applications.
    • User Support: Provide technical support to users to help them effectively utilize information systems and databases.
    • Training Programs: Develop and conduct training programs for staff to enhance their understanding and use of database systems.
    • Documentation: Create and maintain detailed documentation for database systems, procedures, and best practices.
    • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues related to the use of information systems applications and databases promptly.
    • Incident Management: Manage database incidents and outages to minimize downtime and impact on operations.
    • Preventive Measures: Implement preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of database issues and enhance system reliability.

    Skills and Knowledge

    • In-depth knowledge of IT laws and regulations.
    • Understanding of information systems and technology principles.
    • Familiarity with digitization trends in IT, IT architecture, Azure DevOps, and programming.
    • Proficiency in IT security, data management, and system design.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and project management skills.
    • Capability to build alliances and work collaboratively.

    Benefits

    The successful candidate will be offered an all-inclusive salary package ranging from R671 027 to R781 057 per annum. This package includes the option to structure for a 13th cheque, as well as housing, medical aid, and pension allowances.
