The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) has announced several vacancies for investigators who will play a crucial role in maintaining accountability and transparency in the country’s public institutions.


    Key Details about the Investigator Vacancies:

    • Positions Available: 5 vacancies
      • 1 x Location: Mpumalanga (Ref: PPSA 02/06/2025)
      • 2 x Location: North West (Ref: PPSA 03/06/2025)
      • 2 x Location: Gauteng (Ref: PPSA 04/06/2025)
    • Basic Salary:
      • R468,459.00 per annum (plus benefits) for non-legally qualified candidates.
      • R506,238.00 per annum (plus benefits) for legally qualified candidates.
    • Closing Date: 20 June 2025 at 16:30

    These roles are designed to bring people with a keen interest in public service and accountability into the organization to contribute toward the resolution of complaints and issues of misconduct in the public sector.

    Responsibilities

    As an Investigator at the Public Protector SA, your main duties will include:

    1. Conducting Investigations: You will be responsible for conducting investigations related to maladministration, abuse of power, undue delays, and other improper conduct by persons in the public sector.
    2. Report Preparation: You will prepare investigation plans, memos, letters, and other reports, ensuring that they are submitted to the senior investigator for review and approval.
    3. Case Management: You will be expected to manage cases, ensuring that all documentation and case progress are updated regularly and accurately.
    4. Compliance with PPSA Standards: Adherence to the Public Protector’s service standards and applying investigation techniques as prescribed by the PPSA is critical in these roles.
    5. Communication: Keeping complainants informed of the progress of their investigations will be an important part of your responsibilities.
    6. Teamwork: Investigators are expected to be team players, working in collaboration with others in a cohesive and effective manner.

    Qualifications and Experience Required for Investigator Vacancies

    To be eligible for these positions, candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Educational Background:
      • A degree or National Diploma in fields such as Law, Law Enforcement, Forensic Accounting, or Forensic Investigations is required.
      • A legal qualification will be beneficial for candidates applying for the legally-qualified salary band.
    • Experience:
      • A minimum of three (3) years of investigative experience is necessary, especially within the public sector or forensic investigations.
      • A good understanding of South African Public Service Administration is essential.
    • Other Requirements:
      • Knowledge of Case Management Systems (CMS) will be advantageous.
      • You must be proficient in English and have knowledge of other languages relevant to the provinces.
      • A clean criminal record is a must as all successful candidates will undergo security clearance.

    Skills, Competencies, and Knowledge Needed for the Investigator Role

    The role of an Investigator requires a combination of technical skills and personal attributes. Some of the essential skills, competencies, and knowledge for the position include:

    • Excellent Investigation Skills: Candidates should have a strong background in investigation techniques and the ability to analyze information critically.
    • Communication and Negotiation Skills: You must have excellent communication skills for both written and verbal exchanges. You should also be able to negotiate and resolve conflicts, especially during Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes.
    • Legal Knowledge: Understanding relevant legal frameworks, especially those related to the public sector and forensic investigations, is crucial.
    • Analytical Skills: The role requires the ability to process complex information and make decisions based on facts.
    • Customer Service Orientation: Keeping complainants informed and addressing their concerns professionally is key in maintaining public trust.
