Duties and Responsibilities
The IT Media and Communication Officer will be responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive communication plan that aligns with the strategic priorities of the IT department at Stellenbosch University. Below are the key duties:
Strategic Communication
- Developing, implementing, and overseeing a robust IT communication strategy.
- Identifying key stakeholders and implementing targeted communication initiatives.
- Ensuring all communication artifacts align with the university’s corporate identity.
- Guiding and managing IT-related marketing campaigns, technology trends, and cybersecurity awareness programs.
- Designing and updating templates for self-help guides, email communications, and standard operating procedures.
- Managing and maintaining the IT website, service catalog, document repository, and knowledge base.
- Overseeing all IT communication platforms and providing timely feedback and updates.
- Collaborating with various university departments on communication initiatives.
Internal and External Communication
- Drafting, distributing, and managing communications related to:
- IT incidents
- Maintenance weekends
- IT initiatives and projects
- IT events, policies, and strategies
- Staff wellness programs
- Creating digital media (graphics and written content) for cybersecurity incidents, application changes, and stakeholder training.
- Assisting with awareness and training campaigns.
- Planning and contributing to IT newsletters and the annual report.
- Supporting regular reports for the University Senate and Council.
Editing and Translation
- Proofreading and editing IT reports, policies, guidelines, regulations, and presentations.
- Ensuring clear and effective messaging that caters to diverse audiences.
Research, Monitoring, and Innovation
- Keeping up to date with evolving communication trends and stakeholder preferences.
- Monitoring social media platforms and sharing relevant IT-related content.
- Managing the university’s reputation by mitigating risks and ensuring consistent messaging.

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, candidates must have:
- A NQF Level 7 degree in Language, Journalism, or a related field.
- At least five years of experience in an IT and/or educational environment with a focus on:
- Writing, translation, and editing.
- Graphic design for print and digital platforms.
- Web design and content management.
- Managing diverse communication channels.
- Engaging with various stakeholder groups.
- Experience in strategic communication and stakeholder analysis.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of technology.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and their best practices.
- Strong graphic design skills with an ability to create impactful visual content.
- Excellent writing and editing abilities, capable of simplifying complex IT concepts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint).
- Exceptional people skills and stakeholder relationship management capabilities.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines with meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong research and analytical skills to integrate diverse information sources.
Recommended Qualifications
- A background in higher education would be an advantage.
