The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial assistance to students in South Africa who are enrolled in public universities and TVET colleges for undergraduate courses, offering them monthly NSFAS allowance from when academic activities resume till November. But the big question for all applicants is “how much does NSFAS pay per month”.
Well, we will be answering that, keep reading to find out.
Before we get into the amounts, let us first discuss what exactly the NSFAS fund cover.
What Does the Bursary Cover?
NSFAS covers the following costs for all approved students:
- Registration
- Tuition
- Accommodation
- Transport
- Living Allowance
- Leaning Material Allowance
- Personal Care Allowance
And if you are a student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), you will receive funding for the following:
- Tuition
- Books (depending on the number of modules registered)
- Personal Care Allowance
Students living with a disability get additional assistance such as:
- Medical assessments
- Equipment
- Human Support
NSFAS Allowance Amount Per Month
- Study Material (Once off) – R5 200 (only applies at universities)
- Accommodation (Max): R5 617 (Private accommodation)
- Living Allowance: R1 500
- Incidental Allowance: R290
- Travel: R750 (for people that stay at home up to 40 km from the institution)
The allowance is paid through the NSFAS wallet, via the institution, or directly in cash to the students’ bank account.
The amounts may vary as some universities have set amounts for certain things. With TVET colleges, demographics play a huge role in determining the amount one will receive, especially for accommodation and living allowance.
Applications for the 2023 academic year are open till the 31st of January 2023.
