About SASSA – South African Social Security Agency
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a Department of the Social Development entity, it was established in accordance with the SASSA Act (Act No. 9 of 2004) to provide effective and efficient administration, management, and payment of social assistance.
SASSA fulfils this commitment in the service of eligible South Africans who are unable to sustain themselves and their families as outlined in the Constitution.
By the end of March 2021, SASSA reported that it provides income support to over 18,4 million South Africans. When adding the 6+ million beneficiaries of the Covid-19 SRD R350 grant, it can be concluded that SASSA provides social security to about 46% of the country’s population.
