Minimum Requirements
- A National Diploma in Safety Management or a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Safety Management from a recognized institution.
- Additional certifications in Health and Safety, such as NEBOSH or OHSAS, are highly desirable but not mandatory.
- At least 2 years of direct experience in a Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) role.
- Proven track record of managing health and safety systems and compliance within a corporate or industrial setting.
- Experience in leading safety audits, risk assessments, and training sessions
- A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record to enable travel to different sites across the region for inspections and meetings.
- Ability to work flexible hours as required, including occasional weekends and evenings for emergency responses or to meet project deadlines.
Technical Skills
- High level of competency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to effectively create reports, presentations, and manage data.
- Familiarity with health and safety management software is an advantage.
- Extensive knowledge of the Health and Safety legislative framework applicable within South Africa, including but not limited to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Understanding of environmental protection regulations and quality assurance processes that impact the organization.
- Excellent report writing skills, with the ability to produce clear and actionable safety reports that contribute to strategic decision-making.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret safety data and derive meaningful insights for continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Compliance with Health and Safety Legislation:
- Actively ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act through the development, implementation, and monitoring of effective systems and procedures.
- Routinely update and modify safety protocols to align with legislative changes and organizational needs.
- Standard Operating Procedures and Training:
- Develop and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that clearly outline safety practices and expectations.
- Conduct regular awareness sessions to educate staff on SOPs, ensuring all team members understand their roles in maintaining a safe work environment.
- Facilitate comprehensive Health and Safety training programs and induction sessions tailored for new employees, contractors, and plant visitors to foster a culture of safety from day one.
- Audits and Inspections:
- Perform systematic SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) legal audits to identify and mitigate compliance risks.
- Regularly conduct thorough Health and Safety inspections across all areas of the organization, documenting findings and following up on action items.
- Lead the analysis of audit and inspection data to develop strategies for risk reduction.
- Health and Safety Committee Leadership:
- Chair the regional Health and Safety Committee meetings, orchestrating quarterly sessions that focus on evaluating and enhancing safety measures.
- Manage the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive risk register, ensuring all potential issues are logged and addressed systematically.
- Risk Assessments and Reporting:
- Conduct detailed baseline risk assessments to establish a benchmark for safety performance and identify areas of concern.
- Record any violations of safety standards and coordinate the implementation of corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
- Prepare and distribute insightful monthly safety reports to the Regional Manager and other stakeholders, detailing injury claims, safety violations, and the status of ongoing safety initiatives.
- Communication and Coordination:
- Develop and execute a dynamic Health and Safety communication strategy that keeps safety at the forefront of regional operations.
- Coordinate regular Health and Safety meetings, ensuring consistent communication and alignment of safety practices across all departments.
- Ensure that all communications are clear, concise, and accessible, catering to the diverse needs of the workforce.
- Business Continuity and Compliance:
- Implement and maintain a robust business continuity management plan, preparing the organization to operate effectively in the face of disruptive events.
- Vigilantly monitor and ensure regional compliance with all internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
- General Duties and Safety Culture Promotion:
- Serve as a role model by strictly observing all organizational Health and Safety protocols and procedures.
- Handle additional assignments as directed, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to the company’s overarching safety goals.
- Actively promote a safety-first culture throughout the organization, encouraging proactive engagement and continuous improvement in all safety-related activities.
