    CoJ Internship Programme 2023/2024: Bridging the Gap for Future Leaders

    Unemployment among recent graduates has become a pervasive issue in many urban centre worldwide. In Johannesburg, a city known for its vibrant and diverse population, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has taken a commendable step to address this issue through its CoJ Internship Programme. This initiative offers young, qualified, and unemployed graduates a valuable opportunity to gain experience and contribute to their community while receiving essential training and mentorship.


    Duration and Commitment

    The Internship Programme for 2023/2024 spans a period not exceeding eighteen (18) months. Selected interns are required to sign an internship agreement in addition to an employment contract, demonstrating their commitment to fully engage in both educational and workplace assignments following established policies and procedures.

    A Myriad of Opportunities with the CoJ Internship Programme

    The CoJ Internship Programme offers a variety of opportunities in different fields, ensuring that a diverse range of talents can find their place. Here are the available internship opportunities:

    • Management Support Interns: Aspiring individuals with qualifications in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Administration, or Business Management can apply. Duties include report compilation, administration work for Management Support, and coordination of Performance Management Training.
    • Infrastructure Interns: Individuals with a diploma or degree in Finance or Accounting are encouraged to apply. Interns will interact with Transport Finance, Project Managers, and Implementing Agents while assisting with administration work and financial record-keeping.
    • Policy, Planning & Research Interns: If you have a degree in fields such as Housing/Human Settlements, Public Administration, Law, or related Social Sciences disciplines, this opportunity is for you. Duties include contributing to quality research, assisting in policy development, and supporting stakeholder engagements.
    • Finance Interns: Candidates with a National Diploma or Degree in Finance/Accounting or equivalent qualifications can apply. Interns will manage specific Budgeting, Expenditure, and accounting procedures associated with Financial reporting.
    • Sports and Recreation Interns: If you have a National Diploma/N6 in Sports and Recreation, you can contribute to event management, community requests, and research on innovative trends in Sports & recreation.
    • Multi Media & Communication Officer Interns: Individuals with qualifications in Fine Arts, Communication Management, Digital Marketing, or Graphic Design & Software Development can apply. Duties include project planning, media monitoring and analysis, and ensuring effective Stakeholder Relations and Communication.
    • Citizen’s Engagement Coordinator Interns: Those with degrees or national diplomas in Public Administration, Political Science, or Communication Management can participate. Responsibilities include implementing and coordinating strategic plans for public participation and community outreach.
    • Administration Officer Interns: Diploma or Degree holders in fields like Office Administration, Business Management, or Public Administration can contribute by offering guidance to the Speaker of Council, monitoring legislated functions, and engaging with potential stakeholders.

    Skills and Competencies Required for the CoJ Internship Programme

    • Teamwork: Ability to function in a multidisciplinary team.
    • Communication: Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Problem-Solving: Coordination and problem-solving skills.
    • Confidentiality: Ability to handle confidential information.
    • Organization: Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
    • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in office applications.
    • Batho Pele Principles: Commitment to the principles of public service.
