Assistant Catering Officer Job Description
As an Assistant Catering Officer at NWU, you will be responsible for various tasks to ensure the kitchen runs smoothly and efficiently. Below are the key responsibilities and duties:
Key Responsibilities
- Catering
- Plan daily catering tasks in collaboration with the Chef.
- Physically prepare food according to the menu.
- Communicate daily plans to subordinate staff.
- Ensure timely preparation of quality meals.
- Prepare and set up the serving area.
- Supervise the serving area during mealtimes.
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and tidiness of stores and fridges.
- Quality Control
- Maintain neatness, hygiene, and quality service at the serving area.
- Apply portion control and manage food serving.
- Ensure food is tastefully garnished before serving.
- Maintain the appearance of public areas.
- Assist with monthly stock takes.
- Ensure all equipment is in good working order.
- General Operation
- Oversee day-to-day kitchen operations, assisting the Head Chef and Chef.
- Delegate specific tasks to subordinates and take full responsibility for the position.
- Provide relief duty when necessary.
- Liaison
- Coordinate internally with colleagues and externally with clients.
- Always present a positive image of NWU.
- Administration
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and standards in the kitchen.
- Contribute to the development of new menus.
- Personal Development
- Stay informed of the latest catering technology and methods.
- Attend relevant courses to enhance skills.
Key Functional/Technical Competencies
To excel in this role, the candidate must possess the following skills and competencies:
- Ability to work shifts and over weekends.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of large-scale food preparation and use of kitchen equipment.
- Familiarity with stock control and management.
- Understanding of occupational health and safety regulations and procedures.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of a meal payment system.
- Proficiency in personnel management.
