Qualifications and Experience Required
- Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Traffic Officer Diploma.
- Experience:
- 2 – 5 years of relevant experience in traffic enforcement or a similar field.
- Additional Requirements:
- Valid Code EB driver’s license.
- Proficiency in two of the official languages of the Western Cape.
- Firearm proficiency.
- No criminal record or pending cases.
- General Requirements:
- Must be willing to work shifts, standby duties, and regular overtime.
- Must be in excellent health to meet the physical demands of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Road Safety and Patrols
- Conduct regular patrols and monitor streets to identify and address any situations that could endanger road safety.
- Respond to traffic incidents such as accidents, breakdowns, and congestion by implementing safety procedures and equipment.
- Use hand signals to direct traffic and manage the flow of vehicles and pedestrians.
- Organize the removal of obstacles and manage traffic flow during emergencies.
- Inspect roads for hazards like potholes or damaged road signs and report these for repairs.
- Escort large or abnormal vehicles and oversee public events like demonstrations and races to ensure minimal disruption to traffic.
- Enforcement of Traffic Regulations
- Enforce road traffic laws and municipal by-laws by monitoring traffic and addressing infringements such as illegal parking and disobedience of traffic signs.
- Conduct routine roadblocks to check driver licenses, vehicle registrations, and roadworthiness, and to test for drunk driving.
- Set up speed traps and handle violations.
- Issue traffic fines, warnings, or make arrests for more serious offences.
- Serve summonses and execute arrests using warrants.
- Attend court proceedings to provide evidence when necessary.
- Manage informal trading and activities in accordance with municipal by-laws.
- Community Engagement and Additional Services
- Handle public inquiries and complaints regarding road safety and traffic regulations.
- Maintain proper documentation and records for easy retrieval.
- Oversee the proper use and maintenance of office equipment and vehicles.
- Ensure office security and maintenance during and after business hours.
- Support to Management Functions
- Assist with law enforcement, community policing, crime prevention, and school traffic services.
- Maintain a positive work environment to achieve departmental objectives.
- Manage the use of equipment and participate in regular meetings with senior staff.
- Policy and By-Law Enforcement
- Enforce municipal policies, by-laws, and relevant legislation.
- Conduct inspections to ensure businesses and street vendors are properly licensed.
- Assist in planned operations, including roadblocks and checks related to drugs and alcohol.
- Provide visible policing in areas prone to issues to deter crime and maintain public order.
- March and Public Gathering Management
- Monitor and manage marches and public gatherings to ensure safety and order.
- Protect public safety and municipal assets during such events.
- By-Law Compliance
- Regularly inspect public spaces and enforce by-laws concerning nuisances, waste management, and safety regulations.
- Investigate complaints, gather evidence, issue warnings or summonses, and attend court as needed.
- Squatter Control
- Monitor illegal squatting and provide support to service providers in line with safety regulations.
- Enforce the Prevention of Illegal Eviction Act to manage unlawful dwelling constructions.
