Research Assistants Job Description
The successful candidates will play a crucial role in collecting and preserving the oral histories of former political prisoners. This work is vital in ensuring that the stories of resilience, struggle, and hope are not forgotten but are documented for future generations.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize the RIM EPP Database and personal networks to reach out to ex-political prisoners or their families within the specified locations.
- Inform them about the project and its significance, ensuring they understand the importance of their contribution to preserving history.
- Invite them to participate in life history interviews, addressing any questions or concerns they may have about the process.
- Arrange interviews with the participants, ensuring that appointments are scheduled efficiently and conveniently for all parties involved.
- Manage a calendar to keep track of interview dates, times, and locations, making sure to accommodate the schedules of both the interviewees and the interviewers.
- Coordinate with team members to ensure that all necessary equipment and materials are prepared in advance.
- Perform interviews following the guidelines and protocols provided by the Heritage and Research Department.
- Ensure that the interview environment is comfortable and conducive to open and honest conversation.
- Use active listening skills to engage with interviewees, encouraging them to share their stories in detail.
- Handle sensitive topics with care, showing respect and empathy towards the interviewees’ experiences.
Minimum Requirements
- Former Robben Island Political Prisoners: Must be an ex-political prisoner with a verifiable prison number.
- Residency: Born and currently residing in the Eastern Cape.
- Computer Literacy: Basic knowledge of computer operations, including data searching and entry.
- Communication Skills: Excellent telephone manner and verbal communication skills.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in English and other languages spoken in the Eastern Cape.
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to Travel: Ability to travel and stay away from home for up to 4 weeks at a time.
