About SAEON
The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and managed by the NRF since 2002, focuses on observing and researching ecosystems on land, coastal regions, and oceans. SAEON aims to understand how these systems function and change over time, influenced by socio-economic forces like climate change.
The SAEON Arid Lands Node specifically conducts observations on the ecological effects of global change and land use changes across South Africa’s hyper-arid to semi-arid western half.
Education Officer Job Purpose
As an Education Officer, your role will involve planning, developing, and initiating hands-on science education programs for grade 9-11 learners, complementing the national curriculum in natural sciences and geography. You will also develop environmental science programs for learner excursions, assist with citizen science programs in local communities, and engage in community liaison activities. The goal is to enhance SAEON’s impact through participatory science engagement within the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Hands-On Science Activities: Create science activities aligned with Grades 9-11 curricula to build teacher capacity.
- Manage School-Based Projects: Oversee school-based science observation projects using a long-term environmental research schoolyard approach.
- Implement Science-Oriented Activities: Organize holiday camps and shorter excursions for learners, linked to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS).
- Conduct Outreach: Promote SAEON and its objectives to the wider public and within local communities, participating in Node research projects that require community liaison.
- Develop Citizen Science Programs: Assist in the creation and implementation of community-based citizen science programs, including training, data management, and feedback.
- Liaise with Node Scientists: Coordinate with scientists, technicians, postdocs, and interns to promote their research platforms.
Key Requirements
Qualifications
- BSc Honours in environmental science or ecology (MSc advantageous).
- Experience in education or transformative learning is advantageous.
- Background in teaching or tutoring science-related subjects and involvement in environmental education.
Experience
- Experience in science-based education within the environmental/global change field.
- Competency in driving, including a valid driver’s license and experience with a bakkie.
- Fluency in English and Afrikaans, with the ability to translate between the two.
- Experience in planning and implementing education programs.
- Knowledge of transformative and participatory learning approaches.
- Proficiency in computer programs (Word, Excel) and developing engaging learning materials.
- Strong report writing skills.
