Protection Services is seeking a dedicated and professional Security Officer to join their team. This position is integral to ensuring the safety and security of employees, stakeholders, clients, assets, and facilities. The role requires expertise in access control, patrolling, inspections, and emergency response to maintain a secure and safe environment within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
1. Access Control Duties
The Security Officer will be responsible for overseeing and enforcing access control procedures, including:
- Administering the Visitors Management System (VMS) to bar unapproved individuals from entering the campus.
- Scanning and directing visitors to appropriate areas.
- Ensuring employees, visitors, and staff adhere to established access protocols.
- Allowing only authorized uniformed officials (e.g., SAPS, SANDF, Metro Police) entry with official firearms.
- Logging private property and monitoring asset removal through official permits.
2. Patrol Operations
- Conduct regular patrols of designated areas.
- Report malfunctioning alarms or electronic security systems.
- Ensure all doors are locked and secure during patrols.
- Respond immediately to any detected security breaches.
- Inspect fire equipment and report faults to supervisors.
3. Inspections
- Carry out detailed inspections within and around the premises.
- Secure vulnerable assets found in risky areas.
- Conduct vehicular searches when necessary.
- Monitor fire equipment and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks or hazards.
4. Escort Services
The role involves providing escort services to students, staff, contractors, or visitors as required. This may include ad hoc escort duties for special circumstances.
5. Emergency Response
The Security Officer will play a critical role during emergencies such as fire evacuations, student unrest, shooting incidents, and bomb scares. Duties include:
- Acting as the first responder to emergencies.
- Cordoning off crime scenes and preserving evidence.
- Liaising with the control room and law enforcement.
- Assisting injured individuals until professional medical aid arrives.
Academic Qualifications and Experience
Educational Requirements:
- A Matric certificate.
- A PSIRA-accredited certificate (Grade C or above).
- A one-year National Certificate in Security Risk Management.
Experience Requirements:
- 3 to 4 years of relevant experience in the security industry.
- Proficiency in the Criminal Procedure Act and legal aspects of security.
Additional Requirements
- Availability to work weekends and evenings when necessary.
- Ability to pass rigorous background checks and screenings.
- No prior criminal record.
- Strong experience in access control, security patrolling, inspections, and ad hoc duties.
Competencies and Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills to foster good relationships with staff, students, and the public.
- Professional discretion and confidentiality in all interactions.
- Customer-service orientation to support staff and student activities.
- Ability to maintain judgment and decision-making abilities in stressful situations.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Control of Access to Public Premises & Vehicles Act.
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication, as well as report writing.
