Key Responsibilities
Technical Inspectors at the University of Pretoria will be responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of maintenance work performed on campus. Their main duties include:
- Maintenance Optimization and Training
- Ensuring that all completed maintenance work adheres to university standards.
- Providing feedback and training to improve maintenance processes.
- Building and Plant Condition Assessment
- Evaluating the condition of university buildings and infrastructure.
- Identifying areas requiring repair or improvement.
- Statutory Compliance
- Ensuring that all maintenance activities meet legal and safety requirements.
- Conducting inspections in line with South African building regulations.
- Failure Investigation and Reporting
- Analyzing failed maintenance work or recurring issues.

Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for the Technical Inspector position, applicants must meet at least one of the following academic and experience criteria:
- Option 1: A relevant National 3-year Diploma with 3 years of experience in Civil Engineering, Plumbing, or Building disciplines.
- Option 2: A Grade 12 certificate with 5 years of experience in Civil Engineering, Plumbing, or Building disciplines.
Additionally, candidates must have:
- A valid trade test certificate.
- A valid driver’s license.
Required Competencies
To excel in this role, candidates should have the following skills, knowledge, and attributes:
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings.
- Knowledge of construction methods and multiple trades, including:
- Carpentry
- Tiling
- Masonry
- Steelwork
- Plumbing
- Painting
- Waterproofing
- Familiarity with power tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to construction and maintenance.
- Ability to analyze failure reports and suggest improvements.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and email.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- A customer-focused approach with excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Strong teamwork and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Though not mandatory, the following qualifications and experience will be advantageous:
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a higher education institution.
- Risk assessment training and experience.
- Quality assurance training and experience.
- Health and safety training and experience.
- Site inspection training and experience.

Remuneration and Benefits
The successful candidates will receive an annual salary package in line with the University of Pretoria’s policy and appointment guidelines.
