Key Responsibilities
As the Financial Cost Controller, your role will include:
- Financial Administration: Manage financial activities related to Council Controlled and Council Managed Funds to ensure the smooth operation of the University’s financial processes.
- Cost Accounting: Apply cost and management accounting principles to track income and expenditure against allocated budgets.
- Budget Preparation: Assist in the development of departmental budgets and monitor financial performance.
- Reporting: Produce accurate and timely financial and management reports using Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and International Accounting Standards (IAS).
- Expenditure Control: Analyse costs, control spending, and provide financial insights to support decision-making within the Finance Division.
- Support and Analysis: Collaborate with University departments and divisions to ensure sound financial management and cost control across all activities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Education: A relevant National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Financial Accounting or Cost and Management Accounting.
- Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience, ideally within a computerised cost and management accounting environment where there were multiple demands and tight deadlines. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to:
- Maintain and analyse accounting transactions in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Use cost and management accounting principles to monitor income and expenditure against budgets.
- Prepare financial and management reports with supporting analysis.
- Contribute to the budget preparation process.
- Proficiently use Microsoft Excel and Word for day-to-day tasks.
- Experience with ERP systems would be advantageous.
Key Competencies
- Strong understanding of financial principles, accounting standards, and best practices.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word) and familiarity with financial management software (ERP systems experience is an advantage).
- Teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to work across departments.
