Job Purpose
The primary role of the HIV Counsellor is to support the HIV/AIDS Unit and Campus Health Services in providing HIV counselling, testing, and care. The successful candidate will also contribute to health promotion campaigns to create awareness and provide guidance to students and staff.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following qualifications and experience criteria:
Education & Certifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) Certificate
- Accredited Certificate in HIV Counselling & Testing
- Certificate in Adherence Counselling (advantageous)
Skills & Experience
- 3 – 5 years’ experience in HIV Counselling & Testing Services (HCT)
- Experience working with youth and young adults
- Familiarity with sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, and PrEP (advantageous)
- Knowledge of HTS (HIV Testing Services) data recording and RTQII (Rapid Testing Quality Improvement Initiative)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work towards deadlines
Key Responsibilities
The HIV Counsellor will be responsible for delivering critical services and maintaining accurate records. The key areas of responsibility include:
1. HIV Counselling & Testing
- Provide pre-test and post-test counselling for students and staff
- Educate individuals on HIV prevention strategies and treatment adherence
- Offer ongoing counselling and follow-ups for HIV-positive clients
2. Health Promotion & Awareness
- Support the Professional Nurse / Enrolled Nurse in organizing and conducting health promotion campaigns
- Conduct health talks within campus clinics and student residences
- Distribute educational materials and condoms to students
3. Stock Monitoring & Health Screening
- Ensure availability of HIV test kits and screening stock
- Keep accurate records of stock levels and order supplies when necessary
4. Recordkeeping & Administration
- Maintain detailed records of HIV testing, counselling sessions, and condom distribution
- Assist with the clinic appointment booking system
- Submit monthly statistical reports
5. Care & Support Services
- Provide adherence counselling for HIV-positive clients
- Offer confidential support and connect students to relevant health services
Competencies & Skills Required

- Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
- Knowledge of HIV care and support services
- Understanding of antiretroviral treatment adherence
- Ability to record and analyze HTS data
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Commitment to confidentiality, privacy, and discretion
