State Law Advisor Job Purpose
The Western Cape Government’s Department of the Premier is seeking a suitably qualified State Law Advisor to provide corporate legal advisory services. This position requires a highly competent individual to offer expert legal opinions, contract drafting, and legislative guidance to key decision-makers in government.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- LLB Degree
- Admitted as an Advocate or Attorney
- Experience Required:
- LP 7: Minimum 5 years of relevant post-qualification legal experience
- LP 8: Minimum 9 years of relevant post-qualification legal experience
Candidates with extensive experience in public sector law will have an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
As a State Law Advisor, your primary duties will include:
- Providing formal legal opinions in writing to Executive Members, Heads of Departments, and Senior Officials
- Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts of high importance
- Drafting, reviewing, and editing legal correspondence
- Collaborating with the Litigation Unit regarding substantial legal matters and contracts
- Liaising with the State Attorney for legal opinions from junior or senior counsel
- Reporting to the Director: Legal Advisory Services on all legal-related matters
- Efficient management of all allocated legal files (both physical and electronic)
This role is pivotal in shaping governance policies and ensuring the government operates within legal frameworks.
