Key Responsibilities
- Student Support: Provide one-on-one and group consultations to assist students in improving their academic writing skills, including essay writing, report writing, and research papers.
- Workshops and Training: Develop and conduct workshops on various writing-related topics, tailored to the needs of students across different faculties.
- Resource Development: Create and maintain writing resources such as guides, templates, and instructional materials to support students’ writing development.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with faculty members to identify students’ needs and provide targeted support that complements the curriculum.
- Research and Innovation: Engage in research activities related to academic writing and pedagogy, contributing to the continuous improvement of the Writing Centre’s offerings.
- Community Engagement: Participate in outreach activities that promote the University’s mission of community engagement and support the academic success of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as English, Education, or Linguistics. A postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage.
- At least 2-3 years of experience in academic support, teaching, or a related role, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of academic writing conventions and the ability to teach these effectively.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A passion for education and a commitment to student success.
- Applicants who obtained their qualifications outside of South Africa must provide academic transcripts and a SAQA evaluation certificate.
