Key Responsibilities:
As a Legal Aid Paralegal at the Kokstad Satellite Office, you will be responsible for delivering essential paralegal services to clients who meet the eligibility criteria. Working under the supervision of experienced legal staff, you will:
- Assist with Case Preparation: Help in gathering and organizing documents, evidence, and other materials needed for case preparation.
- Client Liaison: Serve as a point of contact for clients, providing updates and information about their cases.
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research to support the work of legal practitioners, ensuring that all relevant laws and precedents are considered.
- Drafting Documents: Prepare legal documents such as affidavits, pleadings, and correspondence under the guidance of legal practitioners.
- Initial Case Assessment: Evaluate the nature of the client’s legal issues to determine if they can be resolved without litigation.
- Alternative Dispute Resolution: Facilitate mediation and negotiation processes to resolve disputes amicably.
- Referral to Legal Practitioners: Identify cases that require court intervention and refer them to qualified Legal Practitioners within Legal Aid SA for further action.
- Follow-Up: Track the progress of referred cases and ensure clients are kept informed throughout the process.
- Database Management: Maintain and update client databases, ensuring that all information is accurate and up-to-date.
- Record Keeping: Keep detailed records of all client interactions, case developments, and administrative actions.
- Document Management: Organize and manage physical and electronic files, ensuring that documents are easily accessible and properly archived.
- Compliance: Ensure that all administrative procedures comply with Legal Aid SA’s policies and relevant legal regulations.
- Initial Consultations: Conduct initial consultations with clients to gather detailed information about their legal issues.
- Form Assistance: Help clients complete various legal forms accurately, ensuring that all necessary information is provided.
- Legal Advice Support: Provide basic legal advice under the supervision of legal practitioners, helping clients understand their rights and options.
- Client Advocacy: Advocate for clients by liaising with other agencies, service providers, and stakeholders on their behalf.
- Community Outreach: Participate in community outreach programs to raise awareness about Legal Aid SA’s services and the importance of legal aid.
