Key Responsibilities
As a Candidate Legal Practitioner, you will work closely with experienced legal professionals, including principal attorneys, to provide comprehensive legal support and representation. You will engage in a wide array of activities, gaining exposure to multiple aspects of legal practice, such as:
- Legal Support: Assisting attorneys with various tasks, such as case preparation and document drafting.
- Client Interaction: Attending client consultations, liaising with witnesses and experts, and maintaining regular communication with all parties involved in a case.
- Court Appearances: Accompanying attorneys to court, attending pre-trial conferences, and observing trial proceedings.
- File Management: Handling daily administrative and legal duties under the supervision of senior practitioners.
- Research & Documentation: Conducting legal research, preparing opinions, drafting agreements, and writing legal correspondence.
- Teaching Assistance: Supporting and assisting law students with practical training and other educational activities offered by the Law Clinic.
Job Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for the position:
- Educational Qualification: Possession of an LLB qualification.
- Language Proficiency: Fluent in both English and Afrikaans (verbal and written).
- Legal Skills: Strong legal writing abilities and familiarity with legal research methodologies.
- Interpersonal Skills: Capability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders.
- Work Ethic: Ability to work under pressure, independently, and as part of a team.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work outside regular office hours, including weekends, if required.
- Multicultural Sensitivity: Ability to function effectively in a multicultural environment and alignment with the values of the Law Clinic.
Preferred Attributes
- Prior Work Experience: Relevant prior work experience in a similar setting will be an advantage.
- Familiarity with Law Clinic Activities: Candidates who are already knowledgeable about the work and operations of the Law Clinic will be highly regarded.
