The primary purpose of this position is to render an environmental health service to local communities, internal and external clients to prevent the compromise of human health factors, including quality of life, determined by physical, chemical, biological, social, and psycho-social factors in the environment.
Environmental Health Practitioner Job Description
As an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) in the Health Services Division, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health by monitoring and controlling environmental factors. Your work will involve direct interaction with communities, providing education, advice, and implementing preventive measures to ensure a healthy living environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Environmental Monitoring and Compliance
- Conduct regular inspections and evaluations of various environmental factors, such as water quality, air pollution, waste management, and sanitation facilities.
- Investigate complaints related to environmental health hazards and take appropriate action to mitigate risks.
- Ensure compliance with local and national health regulations and standards by conducting audits and inspections.
- Public Education and Community Engagement
- Develop and distribute educational materials to raise awareness about environmental health issues.
- Organize community outreach programs to educate the public on best practices for maintaining a healthy environment.
- Advise local businesses, schools, and organizations on how to improve their environmental health practices.
- Risk Management and Preventive Measures
- Identify potential environmental health risks and develop strategies to prevent and control these risks.
- Implement emergency response plans for environmental health crises, such as disease outbreaks or natural disasters.
- Collaborate with other municipal departments and agencies to address broader public health concerns.
- Data Collection and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, investigations, and compliance activities.
- Prepare detailed reports on environmental health conditions and present findings to senior management and relevant authorities.
- Utilize data to inform policy recommendations and improve environmental health services.
Requirements
- Educational Background: A degree or national diploma in Environmental Health or Public Health is required. Additional certifications in related fields will be an advantage.
- Professional Registration: Must be registered as an Environmental Health Officer with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
- Experience: A minimum of three years’ experience in environmental health or municipal health services is essential. Experience in community health programs or public health initiatives will be beneficial.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in using computer software for data management and reporting. Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and environmental monitoring tools is a plus.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with the public and stakeholders. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Analytical and innovative thinking to solve complex environmental health issues.
Additional Requirements
- A relevant three-year tertiary qualification (degree or national diploma) in Environmental Health or Public Health, or an equivalent qualification
- Registration as Environmental Health Officer at the Health Professions Council of South Africa
- At least three years of relevant working experience in environmental health and/or municipal health services
- A valid Code B driving licence
- Computer literacy
- Willingness and ability to work shifts
- Willingness and ability to work beyond normal office hours as and when required
- Willingness to be placed anywhere in Tshwane as required by departmental management
