The Department of Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) is known for its excellent undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes, as well as its extensive research activities. The department is now looking to appoint a qualified and experienced Fitter and Turner to support its teaching and research infrastructure.
Fitter and Turner Job Overview
This position plays a key role in building, upgrading, and maintaining laboratory and workshop equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with both students and staff to support experimental and practical learning within the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, upgrade, and modify apparatus in collaboration with undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Assist in practical training sessions by preparing and maintaining equipment for undergraduate use.
- Maintain and service equipment in labs and the workshop.
- Conduct tasks such as turning, machining, fitting, pipe installations, welding, and sheet metal work.
- Support technical and workshop staff.
- Be part of the department’s occupational health and safety (OHS) team.
- Perform other technical tasks as reasonably required by management.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric with an N3 qualification or higher.
- Qualified artisan relevant to the duties described.
- At least three years’ recent, practical experience in a workshop environment.
- Ability to read and interpret design drawings.
- Physically able to perform demanding technical tasks.
- Strong technical background in machining, fitting, welding, and related tasks.
- Time management, planning, and prioritising skills.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new tools and systems.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently or in a team.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Recommendations
- Experience in a process environment (e.g. pumps, motors, pipe installations).
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, specifically the Machinery Act and its application.
