Head GardenerJob Purpose
Johannesburg Parks and Zoo is seeking dynamic, responsible, and dedicated individuals to fill the position of Head Gardener. This role is essential in ensuring that the natural beauty and health of our parks and gardens are maintained to the highest standard. As a Head Gardener, you will supervise and lead Arboriculture/Horticulture teams to execute scheduled maintenance tasks as directed by the Senior Arboriculturist/Horticulturalist. Your role is pivotal in maintaining compliance with Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) standards, ensuring that all activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and to the required standard.
Key Responsibilities
As a Head Gardener, your duties will include:
- Supervision and Coordination: Overseeing horticultural and arboriculture teams, ensuring that all tasks are completed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). You’ll be responsible for the daily coordination of job cards as directed by the Senior Arboriculturist/Horticulturalist, including both scheduled maintenance and addressing customer complaints.
- Equipment Management: Ensuring that all necessary machinery and tools are in proper working order. You will also organize their transportation to the worksite, ensuring that teams have everything they need to complete their tasks efficiently.
- Inspection and Reporting: Assisting the Senior Arboriculturist/Horticulturalist with site inspections, reporting on team performance, job card status, and any incidents related to safety, the environment, or infrastructure.
- SHEQ Compliance: Ensuring all activities are conducted in line with SHEQ standards and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) policies, maintaining a safe working environment for your team.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Addressing daily complaints and queries from all stakeholders in coordination with the Senior Arboriculturist/Horticulturalist.
Job Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following requirements:
- Education: A Grade 12 or equivalent qualification is essential.
- Experience: At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory role within the horticultural or arboriculture field. Experience in operating horticultural/arboriculture machinery is also required.
- Licensing: A valid South African driver’s license (Code 10) and a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) are mandatory. A Code 14 driver’s license will be considered an added advantage.
- Skills:
- Advanced driving skills, particularly with heavy vehicles like trucks, tractors, or buses.
- Strong navigation abilities and experience with safe driving practices.
- Proficiency in machine operations specific to horticultural and arboriculture machinery.
- In-depth knowledge of plant propagation and horticultural/arboriculture practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Strong leadership qualities, with the ability to supervise, control, and motivate a team effectively.
- Problem-solving skills, time management, and the ability to work under pressure.
- A strong sense of responsibility, reliability, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
