Key Responsibilities of the Internal Auditor
As an Internal Auditor at Legal Aid SA, you will play an essential role in ensuring that internal controls, risk management, and corporate governance practices are effectively implemented and adhered to within the organization. Your core duties will include:
Audit Planning and Execution
- Scheduling audit projects and ensuring all logistics are in place.
- Conducting internal control evaluations and risk assessments.
- Ensuring the effectiveness of internal controls and governance practices.
- Coordinating the execution of audit programs and maintaining risk-based methodologies.
Audit Fieldwork and Reporting
- Conducting audit reviews and ensuring compliance with relevant legal and financial statutes.
- Performing fieldwork on complex audit areas and documenting findings on TeamMate software.
- Drafting detailed audit reports for review by the Internal Audit Supervisor.
- Engaging with auditees through entry and exit meetings during audits.
Use of Technology & Compliance
- Applying data analysis tools such as Inventory Database for Environmental Analysis (IDEA) and TeamMate software.
- Ensuring compliance with Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), National Treasury Regulations, and Legal Aid SA Act.
- Conducting audits in line with the King IV Code of Corporate Governance.
Supervision & Quality Assurance
- Reviewing audit working papers and ensuring timely completion of projects.
- Ensuring the highest quality standards in audit documentation and compliance reporting.
- Conducting performance reviews for subordinates and recommending training programs.
Governance and Special Projects
- Conducting standard governance audits, including special ad hoc projects.
- Identifying areas requiring specialist intervention and resolving challenges in audit execution.
- Assisting the Internal Audit Supervisors with tracking schedules, heat maps, and findings registers.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Competencies
To be considered for this role, candidates should meet the following minimum qualifications and experience requirements:
Education & Certification:
- A three-year qualification with majors in Accounting, Auditing, Internal Auditing, or Management Accounting.
- Membership with the Institute of Internal Auditors (advantageous).
Experience & Technical Knowledge:
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in internal auditing.
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Public Finance Management Act (PFMA)
- National Treasury Regulations
- Legal Aid SA Act
- King IV Code of Corporate Governance
- Proficiency in TeamMate audit software.
Core Competencies & Skills:
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills for drafting reports and conducting audit meetings.
- Attention to detail and ability to handle complex financial and legislative audits.
- Ability to work independently and supervise fieldwork.
- Proficiency in audit sampling methodologies.
