Diesel Mechanic Job Description
As an Artisan: Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing MetroBus diesel engines, transmissions, and various vehicle components. Your expertise will ensure that the bus fleet operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.
Key Performance Areas
1. Bus Fleet Maintenance and Repairs
- Inspection and Diagnostics: Conduct detailed inspections and diagnostics on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems, utilizing modern diagnostic equipment.
- Routine Maintenance: Perform essential maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and component servicing.
- Component Repair & Replacement: Repair or replace faulty components including engines, transmissions, and axles.
- Road Testing: Conduct road tests to identify issues and ensure repairs meet operational standards.
2. Ensuring Bus Safety and Quality
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all repairs adhere to MetroBus safety and quality guidelines, and comply with regulatory standards.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs, documenting each bus’s status.
3. Team Collaboration
- Collaborative Work Environment: Collaborate with various Technical Services personnel, including Artisan Aides, Admin staff, Managers, Supervisors, and drivers, to resolve technical issues.
- Training & Mentorship: Guide and train Apprentices and Artisan Aides, assisting in their professional development.
- Service Improvement: Contribute to service delivery improvement initiatives through feedback and suggestions.
4. Administrative Duties
- Documentation: Complete work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance records accurately.
- Inventory Monitoring: Order parts as needed, monitor inventory levels, and report discrepancies.
Essential Requirements
To be considered for the Diesel Mechanic Artisan role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- Matric/Grade 12 Certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4.
- NTC 3 qualification in mechanical studies and a Trade Test Certificate: Diesel Mechanic.
- Work Experience:
- Minimum of two years post-Trade Test experience as a Diesel Mechanic, ideally with a large fleet of high-tech buses or similar vehicles.
- Experience with bus-specific diagnostic tools and equipment will be advantageous.
- Additional Requirements:
- Driver’s License: Code C or Code EB.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment for diesel engines is preferred.
- Other Requirements:
- Security Vetting: Successful candidates will undergo security vetting.
- Financial Disclosure: Upon employment, the successful candidate must disclose any financial interests as required by MetroBus.
- SAQA Accreditation: All foreign qualifications must be accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
