    Requirements

    To be considered for this Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant position at the Gauteng Department of Health, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Qualification: Must be a qualified Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
    • Registration: Must be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Qualified Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
    • Current Registration: Must have current registration with SAPC for 2024.
    • Experience:
      • Grade 1: 0-5 years’ experience as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
      • Grade 2: 5-10 years’ experience as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
      • Grade 3: 10 years and above experience as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.

    Competencies/Skills Required:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and planning skills.
    • High level of reliability and ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Ability to act with tact and discretion and effectively handle conflict.
    • Good telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure, take initiative, and work effectively in a team.
    • Knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and procedures.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant at the Gauteng Department of Health, you will be responsible for:

    1. Stock Control: Assisting with the control of stock, including ordering, receiving, and distributing medicines in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and relevant legislation.
    2. Compounding and Preparation: Assisting in the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile or sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulas and SOPs.
    3. Manufacturing: Assisting in the manufacturing of non-sterile or sterile medicines or scheduled substances as per approved procedures.
    4. Re-Packaging and Distribution: Assisting with the re-packaging of medicines and the distribution and control of stock of Schedule 1 to Schedule 7 medicines or scheduled substances.
    5. Ordering Medicines: Assisting with the ordering of medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 7 as per authorized instructions, in compliance with the Medicines and Related Substances Act, 101 of 1965.
    6. Prescription Processing: Reading and preparing prescriptions, selecting, manipulating, or compounding the medicine, labeling and supplying the medicine in appropriate containers, and providing usage instructions following pharmacist interpretation and evaluation.
    7. Promoting Health and Safety: Providing information to promote health and the safe use of medicine.
    8. Adherence to Guidelines: Adhering to Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) guidelines as published in the rules of the SAPC, and adhering to timelines.
    9. Continuous Training: Being willing to undergo continuous training and development programs and attend meetings and training sessions as approved by a supervisor.

    Salary Package

    The salary for the position of Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant is divided into three grades based on experience:

    • Grade 1: R250,947.00 – R285,921.00 per annum (plus service benefits)
    • Grade 2: R290,436.00 – R307,221.00 per annum (plus service benefits)
    • Grade 3: R313,308.00 – R355,812.00 per annum (plus service benefits)
