About the Role
The Process Controller – Filtration will play a pivotal role in monitoring, operating, and maintaining the filtration plant and associated equipment. The successful candidate will ensure adherence to strict water quality standards, overseeing filtration performance, disinfection, and chlorine plant operations. This position requires a performance-driven individual with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to handle responsibilities in a plant environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Filtration Monitoring and Control:
- Monitor and control filter plant performance to ensure compliance with water quality standards post-filtration.
- Operate filters following operational procedures, including manual and SCADA-based backwashing.
- Ensure sterilization of filters for repair and maintenance as per Rand Water protocols.
- Chlorine Plant Operation:
- Operate chlorine equipment (evaporators, chlorinators, injectors, compressors) to maintain water disinfection standards.
- Monitor chlorine plants to comply with safety and operational requirements.
- Handle chlorine cylinders, ensuring sufficient stock availability on-site.
- Pump Operations:
- Start and stop main pumps as requested, ensuring operational efficiency.
- Safety and Reporting:
- Report unsafe conditions and chemical spills to the Water Purification Supervisor.
- Adhere to safety protocols to prevent injury or harm to employees.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- A Grade 12 certificate combined with an NQF level 3 qualification in Water and Wastewater Treatment.
- Experience:
- A minimum of two years’ experience, with at least one year in a plant or water purification environment.
- Technical Skills:
- Computer literacy is essential.
- Candidates must hold a valid Code 08 Driver’s License and pass Rand Water’s K53 test.
- Registration or eligibility to register as a Class III Process Controller.
Knowledge and Skills

- Basic understanding of the water treatment process.
- Safety procedures.
- Basic engineering principles related to flow and pressure.
- Basic Mathematics for plant operations.
