About Mining Qualifications Authority
The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) responsible for skills development in the mining and minerals sector. It operates under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and supports mine health and safety under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE). The MQA plays a critical role in facilitating skills development and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, including the Skills Development Act (SDA) 97 of 1998 and the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) 29 of 1996.
Research Officer Job Descrption
The primary purpose of the Research Officer role is to conduct rigorous research on the skills landscape within the mining and minerals sector. This research will generate actionable insights to inform and drive effective skills development initiatives supported by the MQA. The successful candidate will report to the Skills Development and Research Manager and work closely with various stakeholders to ensure research quality and relevance.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of the MQA’s annual research agenda.
- Establish relevant research methodologies and sampling techniques.
- Develop research instruments to effectively gather data.
- Collect both qualitative and quantitative data, including conducting semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and administering surveys.
- Perform desktop research and literature reviews to support data collection efforts.
- Clean, weight, process, and analyze research data.
- Ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance with relevant data analytic approaches.
- Organize and maintain research databases.
- Compile comprehensive reports and updates on skills development research studies.
- Ensure reports are clear, concise, and tailored to diverse audiences.
- Develop and present research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure research findings are accessible and informative for various audiences.
- Implement quality control processes throughout the research process.
- Ensure research quality meets the required standards.
- Manage research projects to ensure timely completion and quality deliverables.
- Adhere to set timelines and allocated budgets.
- Maintain research outputs and stay up-to-date with trends in skills development within the mining and minerals sector.
- Maintain accurate research records.
- Assist with financial tracking and coordination of meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Manage research resources efficiently.
Key Requirements
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences, Economics, or Statistics) at NQF level 7.
- A Postgraduate/Honours Degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences) at NQF level 8 will be an added advantage.
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of research experience in qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Proven proficiency in statistical analysis software (SPSS) and qualitative data analysis software (ATLAS.ti or NVivo).
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise research reports and presentations.
- Proven track record of successful project management in research studies.
Competencies
- Knowledge: Thorough understanding of the mining and minerals sector and skills development landscape. Familiarity with relevant legislation and policies.
- Skills: Advanced computer skills (Ms Excel, Word, Teams, PPT), statistical and qualitative techniques, organizational skills, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- Attributes: People-oriented, results-driven, attention to detail, perseverance, willingness to learn, and ability to work under pressure.
