Minimum Requirements
To be considered for these positions, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Educational Qualification: Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.
- Traffic Officer Diploma: A valid Traffic Officer’s Diploma issued by an approved Traffic Training Centre.
- Driving License: Must hold at least a Code B driving license (manual transmission).
- Medical Fitness: Applicants must provide a valid medical certificate proving fitness to undergo strenuous physical exercises.
- Registration: Proof of registration as an authorised officer, including the registration certificate with an infrastructure number from the National Department of Transport or the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
- Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience as a Traffic Officer is required.
Special Conditions of Appointment
Applicants must meet the following special conditions before appointment:
- Competency Certificate: Eligibility to obtain a competency certificate for appointment as a Peace Officer.
- Firearm Competency: Candidates must be eligible to obtain a firearm competency certificate.
- Driving Skills: As part of the selection process, candidates will undergo a driving evaluation/assessment.
- Work Flexibility: Candidates must be willing to work overtime when required, including involuntary overtime.
- Peace Officer Registration: Candidates must comply with the competency and registration requirements under the National Road Traffic Act (Act 93 of 1996).
Competency Requirements
- Peace Officer Competency: You must be eligible for certification as a Peace Officer, allowing you to enforce laws and maintain order.
- Firearm Certification: You must meet the requirements to obtain a firearm competency certificate.
- Physical Fitness: A medical certificate will be required as proof of your ability to handle the physical demands of the job.
- Driving Skills Evaluation: A driving skills evaluation will be part of the selection process to ensure that you can operate vehicles effectively in various situations.
Key Responsibilities
As a Traffic Officer with the City of uMhlathuze, you will play a vital role in maintaining law and order on the roads, ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike. Your responsibilities will include:
- Road Safety Enforcement: Implementing and enforcing road safety regulations and traffic by-laws.
- Traffic Control: Directing and managing traffic at intersections, accident scenes, school crossings, funeral processions, and other public events.
- Law Enforcement: Issuing summonses to traffic offenders and executing warrants of arrest when necessary.
- Public Safety Coordination: Assisting in law enforcement, traffic control, and ensuring a free flow of traffic within the city.
- Monitoring and Responding: Monitoring local traffic conditions and responding to situations that could pose risks to public safety.
