Trainee Train Assistant Job Description
As a Trainee Train Assistant, your role is to assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of trains, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy-haul, and passenger trains. You will help ensure that cargo and freight reach their destinations safely, on time, and in excellent condition.
This opportunity will provide practical and theoretical training to prepare you for a full-time Train Assistant role.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
As a Trainee Train Assistant, your primary responsibilities will include:
1. Signing on Duty and Preparing Locomotives
- Report to the workplace and receive task allocations.
- Identify and prepare the designated locomotive.
- Obtain and place necessary equipment on the locomotive.
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
- Clean the working area.
- Assist with starting up the locomotive.
- Conduct locomotive brake tests.
- Couple the locomotive and dispatch it.
2. Communication Equipment Preparation
- Obtain communication tools such as radios, handsets, and walkie-talkies.
- Ensure all communication equipment is fully functional.
3. Train Preparation and Departure Procedures
- Conduct pre-trip locomotive and train inspections.
- Attach/detach vehicles per work orders when necessary.
- Complete vehicle lists and vacuum forms.
- Mount train indicators and telemeters where required.
- Perform brake tests in coordination with the Train Driver.
4. Shunting Operations
- Follow work orders to safely place, remove, and maneuver trucks.
- Update vehicle lists and ensure proper train formation.
- Assist in clearing loaded and empty trucks at designated sidings.
5. Assisting Train Driver En Route
- Ensure the safe movement of the train from departure to its final destination.
- Communicate signal positions with the Train Driver.
- Observe preceding trains and monitor locomotive performance.
- Reset locomotive trip-outs when needed.
- Assist in emergency situations and provide protection during incidents.
6. Administrative Duties
- Maintain and update the Train Journal.
- Submit necessary reports to the Section Manager at the end of each shift.
Qualifications and Experience Required
Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments every 12 months.
- Must meet physical fitness standards (vision, hearing, and mental health).
- Minimum height requirement of 1.6 meters.
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Psychomotor ability (assessed through Vienna Testing System – VTS).
Training and Certification:
- Must be prepared to complete both theoretical and practical training to become certified as a Train Assistant.
- Be willing to obtain a Train Assistant certificate and work independently.
Skills and Competencies Needed
To succeed in this role, applicants should possess the following skills:
Technical and Operational Knowledge:
- Familiarity with communications systems and train operations.
- Understanding of locomotive classes and depot layouts.
- Knowledge of train working rules, yard and siding layouts, and shunting procedures.
- Awareness of health and safety regulations (Occupational Health and Safety Act 85).
