Purpose of the Meter Reader Job
The primary purpose of the Meter Reader position is to ensure that all water meters are read accurately and consistently, maintaining a high level of integrity in data collection. This role is crucial for the effective billing and management of water resources in Johannesburg.
Key Responsibilities
As a Meter Reader, you will be tasked with various responsibilities that require attention to detail, accuracy, and customer interaction. Your daily duties will include:
- Route Management:
- Confirm plotting of walling routes, GIS maps, and data on electronic devices and manually on spreadsheets daily.
- Provide input to the Senior Meter Reader on route anomalies and any need for re-ordering.
- Meter Verification:
- Accurately locate the relevant water meter using address, GIS, and meter number to verify its validity.
- Identify new or changed meters and record the data accordingly.
- Data Submission:
- Ensure the submission of manually recorded data and perform revisits on no-access codes previously obtained, daily per route issued.
- Perform data cleansing activities as needed, including identifying unmetered properties, unbilled properties, and correcting meter master data.
- Customer Interaction:
- Advise customers on measures to reduce water wastage or high bills due to unseen leaks, such as how to detect a leak.
- Log customer service issues on route, such as leaking or burst water meters, leaking pipes, blocked sewer pipes, or external utility issues.
Job Requirements
To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following essential qualifications and experience criteria:
- Education: Matric (NQF 4).
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of periodic meter reading experience within a municipal environment.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of the meter reading process and its importance in the municipal water supply chain.
