Campus Cleaning Role Summary
The Head of Campus Cleaning will be responsible for the comprehensive planning, development, and implementation of campus cleaning strategies and schedules. The incumbent will oversee policy and procedure development, ensure adherence to health and safety standards, manage a diverse team of cleaning personnel, and handle risk management within the campus environment. Reporting directly to the Director of Built Environment, the Head of Campus Cleaning will play a pivotal role in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene across the university.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Budget Management: Draft, implement, and monitor the divisional budget. Identify and adapt to changing operational situations to stay within budgetary constraints. Participate in the establishment and implementation of contingency plans to reduce financial risk.
- Service Delivery: Ensure a high standard of service delivery in alignment with the department’s strategic goals. This includes the cost-effective procurement of services related to cleaning and hygiene.
- Collaboration and Contract Management: Work closely with internal customers and manage external service providers to ensure teamwork and high-quality outcomes.
- Development and Implementation of SOPs: Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the area of responsibility, ensuring that cleaning standards are consistently met.
- Employee Management: Manage a diverse team of cleaning and hygiene employees in line with SMU’s HR policies. This includes setting performance outputs, conducting disciplinary processes, and ensuring continuous training on cleaning techniques and safety standards.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with the university’s Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) policies and procedures, promoting a safe working environment for all staff.
- Innovation and Service Improvement: Support and facilitate the implementation of new innovations, initiatives, and service delivery improvements. Contribute to the overall development of SMU and actively work to enhance the institutional culture.
Requirements
To be considered for this Campus Cleaning role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications: A three-year Degree or Diploma in Hospitality Management, Facility Management, Business Management, or a related qualification.
- Experience:
- At least 4 to 6 years of experience in diverse cleaning and hygiene services.
- A minimum of 3 years of managerial experience, with responsibilities including employee supervision, training, and guidance.
- Skills:
- Strong management and administrative skills.
- Ability to develop and implement strategies and maintain systems.
- Excellent leadership, planning, and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in report writing and presentation.
- Problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Client service orientation with professional and technical skills.
- Additional Requirements:
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, and Email.
- A valid South African Driver’s license.
Competencies
- Ability to interact pleasantly and effectively with students and employees at all levels.
- Experience and knowledge in health and safety management and relevant legislation within the cleaning environment.
