Head of Communications Job Description
The Head of Communications will report directly to the Group Executive: Corporate Affairs & Marketing and play a critical role in developing and executing communication strategies for the SABC. As the spokesperson of SABC, the successful candidate will advise management on key matters relating to communication and reputation management. This leadership role requires a dynamic individual who can manage a large team, work under pressure, and maintain the organisation’s communication integrity across various platforms.
Responsibilities
As the Head of Communications, your role will focus on several critical areas, including:
1. Development and Implementation of Strategy
- Contribute to the development of the Corporate Affairs & Marketing strategy.
- Design and implement comprehensive communication and stakeholder management strategies.
- Lead public relations (PR) campaigns that align with SABC’s broader strategic goals.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to the communications team to ensure successful execution of communication initiatives.
2. Business Operational Efficiency
- Oversee the production of press releases, reports, and speeches, ensuring the content is accurate and of high quality.
- Manage internal communication to improve staff engagement across various channels.
- Maintain strong relationships with PR and reputation management agencies.
- Explore innovative ways of disseminating information internally and externally.
- Develop an influencer or ambassador program to further enhance SABC’s brand presence.
3. Governance, Risk, and Compliance

- Foster relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to advance SABC’s business priorities.

5. Leadership and People Management
- Ensure effective staffing, performance management, and leadership within the communications department.
- Develop Career Development Plans (CDPs) for all team members to ensure their continuous growth.
- Foster a positive working environment that encourages creativity and efficiency.
6. Financial Management
- Oversee departmental expenditure and ensure that budgets are adhered to.
- Implement measures to avoid wasteful expenditure while ensuring that funds are allocated optimally to meet operational requirements.
Requirements
- Education:
An Honours Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Internal Communications, or an equivalent qualification is essential. - Experience:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in communications, with at least 5 years spent managing a communications or stakeholder relations team. Previous experience in the broadcasting and media sector is highly advantageous. - Skills:
- Exceptional writing skills across multiple platforms and languages.
- Proven ability in content creation tailored to different target audiences.
- Strong research and digital media management skills.
- Extensive knowledge of stakeholder management and strategic communications.
- Understanding of relevant legislative frameworks and broadcasting regulations.
