Key Responsibilities of the Security Officer Role
Security Officers at UJ will be responsible for providing professional protection services, ensuring the safeguarding of property, assets, students, staff, and visitors. Their primary duties will include:
1. Security Services
- Conducting regular patrols across campus to prevent unauthorized access and detect signs of intrusion.
- Enforcing security policies and ensuring compliance among students, staff, and visitors.
- Ensuring all physical security infrastructure (e.g., gates, street lights, burglar proofing) is functional and reporting any faults.
- Responding swiftly to emergency incidents and securing crime scenes when necessary.
- Documenting incidents through accurate reporting, including both verbal and written statements.
- Operating security systems effectively and handling security-related equipment.
- Conducting preliminary investigations into reported offenses.
- Providing escort services for staff at night to ensure their safety.
2. Access Control
- Implementing and enforcing UJ’s access control procedures.
- Verifying permits for personnel, students, visitors, and vehicles.
- Conducting bag and vehicle searches in accordance with security protocols.
- Locking and securing gates and doors after operational hours.
3. Customer Service & Campus Support
- Delivering a professional and courteous security service to all members of the university community.
- Assisting during public events, open days, and campus demonstrations to ensure safety.
- Providing guidance and directions to students and visitors when necessary.
- Upholding a culture of service excellence, responding effectively to queries, and maintaining positive relationships with the university community.
4. Health & Safety Support
- Acting as the first responder in case of emergencies, such as fires or medical incidents.
- Using personal protective and security equipment correctly, maintaining its cleanliness and reporting malfunctions.
5. Professional Development
- Engaging in ongoing security training and professional development as required by UJ.
- Following instructions and directives from senior security personnel to enhance skills and knowledge.

Minimum Requirements for Applicants
Candidates interested in applying must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Grade 12/Matric/NQF4 qualification.
- Valid Grade C PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) registration.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Clearance certificate from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in security services.
- Medical, psychological, and physical fitness suitable for the role.
Preferred Qualifications & Additional Considerations

- A higher qualification (NQF5 or above) in security-related studies.
- Experience with electronic access control and video management systems.
- Background in educational or corporate security services.
- A Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP).
- Higher PSIRA grades (A or B) or accreditation in areas like armed reaction and special events security.
- SAPS firearm competency certification.
- Firefighting and first aid training/experience.
Working Conditions and Expectations
Security Officers at UJ will be required to operate within demanding working conditions, including:
- Shift-based work schedules, covering 24/7/365 operational requirements.
- Work assignments across multiple UJ campuses as needed.
- Wearing a uniform and working in all weather conditions.
- Carrying a firearm, subject to operational needs.
