Position Overview
Teaching Assistants will play a vital role in supporting students enrolled in the College of Education. Their responsibilities will focus on facilitating online learning, enhancing student engagement, and providing timely academic and technical assistance.
Key Responsibilities
Successful candidates will take on the following duties:
- Deliver course content and pedagogy effectively online.
- Provide academic and technical support to students.
- Facilitate the delivery of online tutorials and manage virtual interactions.
- Respond to student queries within 48 hours.
- Grade assignments and provide constructive online feedback.
- Support students’ peer-to-peer interactions through forums and other online platforms.
- Carry out ad-hoc administrative tasks, including managing grading spreadsheets, plagiarism reports, and high-risk student evaluations.
General and Specific Requirements
General Requirements
- Must not be a UNISA fixed-term or permanent staff member.
- Must not currently hold an appointment as a UNISA e-tutor or Teaching Assistant.
- Must have ongoing access to internet and necessary software at their own cost.
- Must be committed to deadlines and passionate about student-centered learning.
Specific Requirements for Module BPT1501 (Being a Professional Teacher)
- A professional teaching qualification.
- An M.Ed. or Ph.D. in Teacher Education.
Skills Required
- Advanced computer and internet skills with no training provided for software or email usage.
- Proficiency in English, with excellent communication skills.
- Sensitivity to diverse student needs, combined with a friendly and patient demeanor.
Terms and Conditions
As an Independent Contractor, successful applicants will:
- Not be considered employees of UNISA and will not receive benefits such as medical aid, office space, or leave entitlements.
- Work from their own home, providing their own computer, internet connection, and workspace.
- Be expected to dedicate a minimum of five days per week (at least one hour daily) to online teaching tasks, including grading assignments.
- Participate in compulsory online training before appointment finalization.
Remuneration
The gross remuneration for the role is R18,060.80.
